You are using an extremely old DVD. Suggest you find & try the 'XxX' 10.4.10 DVD plus its PPF1 patch - all it lacks is the correct Ethernet kext, which can be found here, as can much good advice. Blue1980
thank you for your reply. should i be typing xxx 10.4.10 jas into bittorrent then? as you can tell, extremely new to this.
shoarthing
thank you for your reply. should i be typing xxx 10.4.10 jas into bittorrent then? as you can tell, extremely new to this. . . suggest you read this sticky; then, having dutifully read that, suggest that search-strings that might bear fruit could be:"XXX_OSx86_10.4.10_Install_Disc_Intel_SSE2/SSE3" . . & "XxX_OSx86_10.4.10_Install_Disk_PPF1" . . [you need both, plus the author is working on a PPF2] . . also suggest you read this thread [particularly those fairly early posts which talk about BIOS settings] . . in principle, before installation you want to disable the onboard jmicron thingie, disable any mention of Intel RAID, disable the NIC's PEX, & make sure SATA is set to AHCI &that your DVD-drive is plugged into the SBridge PATA connector [not the jmicron one] - there are a few CPU settings which *should* be set to non-default values; but cannot remember them off-hand. XxX install options could be something along the lines of:Basic system, plus your ATI vid-driver [check this out beforehand with a search of these forums], plus 8.10.3 kernel, plus Realtec 882 sound [works well], minus 'verbose mode' [i find this annoying], plus ICH7R SATA . . that should be about right. You will need to have the hacked 'IONetworkingFamily.kext' [from the link I gave earlier] on a CD or USB stick & replace the exisitng one & repair permissions. Blue1980
o....k... i'm afraid not a lot of that made sense. i've obviously followed an extremely old guide. i have used vmware to install a 6.4gb image on a 40gb ide drive. maybe i should be looking at a newer installation guide and start from scratch. any recommendations on that? shoarthing
. . there's a *.pdf guide to HDD preparation w/ with the XxX *.zip - that's about all you need to know. Installing to SATA makes more sense; but I'm sure you can install to a PATA HDD. You burn the XxX *.iso [having patched it] to a DVD & boot off the thing. An installer runs & gives you access [via a toolbar at the top & 'utilties' menu] to the OSX Disk Utility It makes life simplest of all if you install to a clean HDD, previously formatted to a single [active/primary] FAT32 partition. shoarthing
where would i find this *.pdf file? . . there's a *.pdf guide to HDD preparation inside the XxX PPF1 *.zip (edit: may be in the same *.zip as the *.iso - can't remember) . . . let me get this straight. the installation is done no differently to installing windows? . . more like an exceptionally well-sorted Linux distro [with a very small pool of supported hardware]; but yup

shoarthing
. . hmm [it is against forum policy, & quite right too, to provide linkage to such things] . . . If you found yourself on a bay somewhere, with the jolly roger flying overhead, you might trip over a ready-patched [to PPF1] version of the XxX 10.4.10; further exploration might well uncover the thing unpatched. Similarly, if you were invited to take a mug o' sulphur with a green demon; you could find - well - anything. NB: AFAIK the unpatched version is much more desirable - you will be able to patch it yourself to PPF1 or any subsequent patches.

SMF
Your first step should be to search for "Asus P5W" (use the quotes since you can't search for anything less than 4 letters) in the hardware forum. You will find several threads dedicated to making OS X work on your motherboard. No better place to start than with someone who has already done it..... Blue1980
I installed from the xxx disc over the top of deadmoo image and it upgraded to 10.4.10 with no functionality of anything still. so i decided to use the disk manager in the install dvd to erase the disc then partition it. since i have done that it will get to the install part then not install. i'm starting to pull my hair out. I'm using a standard IDE 40gb HDD as slave to dvd rw drive. any advice would be appreciated. it seems that any advice concerning my mobo is to do with after install. The easiest way is to have, as you do, a single partition on a dedicated HDD & use Disk Utility to 'erase' an existing primary FAT32 partition made from Windows. 'erase' = reformat to the Mac journaled FS. Once you faff around with partitioning the thing using Disk Utility is gets a little more complex: you *must* choose to use 'MBR' [rather than 'GUID'] when in the partitioner, & I found the thing iffy when faced with more than one partition [it appeared to put small amounts of unused space between partitions, rather than abut them properly on cylinder boundaries]. So . . suggest you fire up into your existing XP installation [with the 40GB IDE HDD also attached] then repartition & format it as a single FAT32 primary, make active, then shut down, remove the Windows HDD, boot up with the XxX DVD, go to Disk Utility & only choose to 'erase' the partition you have just made. This *should* work. There are many other ways, of course, but this has the merit of simplicity.
Blue1980
I set it up with the HDD as master and DVD as slave. removed the sata drive that has windows on it and ran the install with nothing but the options that are already ticked on the disk for installation. and it worked. when it finishes should i then run the dvd again to install the other parts like sound drivers, network drivers etc or is there a better way of doing that? I went throught the XxX install options for the P5W-DH in this post - you can choose pretty well all the correct drivers [except the patched IONetworkingFamily.kext for your Yukon 88E8053 NICs] from the XxX DVD during the install. Post-install [without the specific P5W-DH drivers] you can find most of these drivers [packages] on the XxX DVD, or from the links I have already provided. Blue1980
you pointed me to the same posting. lol. I'm afraid my technical knowledge is patchy at best. i have the dvd working off the HDD now. should i rerun the dvd and install all the other options? i'm lost now. shoarthing
. . have a look at this image of the XxX installer Options screen. I suggest you might choose, for a fresh install: 1: No to verbose mode 2: Yes to 8.10.3 Kernel [Latest: works fine for me] 3: Yes to ICH-7R [= P5W-DH SATA] 4: Yes [i assume: don't know what works with your hardware - check this out with a search of these forums] to the ATI 1x00 driver 5: Yes to ALC883 . . digital [=P5W-DH sound] 6: Yes [live a little: give it a whirl] Marvell Gigabit Ethernet [unsure this works for the 88E8053 - I've always installed this manually] Good luck & hope to hear you've got this sorted. SMF
You can use disk utility. Start it up, select the partition you want to repair permissions on and hit the repair permissions button... SMF
