ipguy
Being new to the OSX community, i came across an interesting application.... PearPC If we can run an unmodified version of OSX in a PearPC VM, why is it so hard to run an unmodified version without PearPC ? What is PearPC doing that isn't do'able on our standard hardware. mgamber
It emulates a PPC CPU which is what Apple OS's have been running on forever. No muss, no fuss. The downside is that it's so slow as to be, practically speaking, worthless. Otherwise we'd all be using that and this site would be empty. skyhighmac
PearPC is excruciatingly slow, only about 10% of your systems native speed. ipguy
you have both missed my point... forget speed issues and processor emulation for as moment, osx is able to be installed on a mac, not because the processor is ppc or intel, or because it's fast or slow, though both are valid reasons, the os is able to be installed in a peearpc because they satisfy the needs of the kernel and drm code built into OSX, making it think it's being installed on a real mac. if pearPC can emulate the required needs for a native OSX to run, without the kernel being hacked... what are they doing to accomplish that ? how are they able to install a native osx in a pearpc without any hacking of the os ? ipguy
i may have found the answer to my own question. pearpc works because PPC OSX doesn't have any DRM/TPM code. the intel OSX version does. skyhighmac
Yeah. Apple put in the protection because Apple was the only company other than ibm selling powerpc computers. Intel processors are much more popular, I mean, look at this forum. ~pcwiz
PearPC works with OS X because it emulates a PowerPC processor When we are running native, there is NO PowerPC emulation taking place so it won't work. If Intel processors had built-in PowerPC emulation (lol) then we would definitely be able to run PowerPC OS X natively. And PearPC is SUPER slow. Its like trying to run Windows Vista on a 10 year old computer. EddieR
PearPC was great at one time long ago, basically it emulates a Power PC computer fooling the MacOSX into thinking it is being installed into a genuine PowerPC. The current emulators on the market such as Parallels etc can in fact run MacOSX, but, the manufacture has disabled that ability, since they know full well an Apple Lawsuit would loom immediately, by Jobs...
