Hi there,

I would like to share with you the recent application gems I have come across.

Throttled Pro 1.2:

Throttled Pro optimizes your internet connection and provides "QoS (Quality of Service)" to Mac OS X. It provides both ACK packet prioritization and PRIQ priority services. For the non-technical reader out there, it allows for better bidirectional speeds, and allows you to prioritize your internet applications for increased responsiveness and throughput.

Features:

  • Provides instantanious response for SSH, HTTP, HTTPS, POP, IMAP and VNC connections. Also allows you to prioritize any other internet protocol you want to remain responsive under heavy load.
  • Includes optimizations for many online games including Unreal Tournament 2004, World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, Ghost Recon, Starcraft, Warcraft II, Warcraft III, and Diablo II.
  • Manages BitTorrent, FTP, DCC and other file sharing protocols so your connection always stays lag free.
  • Allows you to cap the bandwidth of any service or combination of services. You may have an unlimited number of bandwidth caps if you use the Advanced Configuration panel.
  • Provides ACK packet priority to guarantee fast download speeds while your machine is uploading at maximum speed.

Sticky Windows 2.0:

If you're a former user of Mac OS 9, there's a good chance you were a fan of tabbed windows. This feature let you drag a window to the bottom of your Mac's display, where it became a pop-up "tab." When Mac OS X came along, tabbed windows were left behind, much to the chagrin of many users. Sure, you can minimize windows to OS X's Dock, but it's not quite the same.

If you still miss tabbed windows all these years later, give Giovanni Donelli's Sticky Windows 2.0 ($15) a try. Once installed, you can drag any window to any edge of your screen—not just the bottom—and it will turn into a small tab. Click on the tab to toggle that window between full-size and tabbed view; the tab remains until you manually drag it from the edge of the screen. (If you've got multiple tabs around the edges of your screen, those with windows currently in full-size mode have their names greyed out.)

I have personally tried these apps out and I find them both to be real OSX enhancements and worth trying out.

Cheers,

The main objective of Throttled Pro, is to enhance your internet connection and provide QoS (Quality of Service: what is it?). This does not necessarily mean that your downloads will go faster, per-se, but it will distribute your network resources "more evenly". This means that the overall responsiveness of the network will be better and your network will run "smoother".

Since core networking technologies like Ethernet were not designed to support prioritized traffic or guaranteed performance levels (making it much more difficult to implement QoS solutions across the Internet), running Throttle Pro in network environments with modern network applications concurring with each other (say, online games and torrent clients) could mean less lag and faster downloads.

Cheers,
