KRiSX
Hey all I've been interested in mac's for a long time, I work with Windows based PC's and Servers professionally, but I just really really like OS X and have always wanted to use it at home. Anyways, I have got myself a copy of the 10.4.9 uphuck v1.3 dvd and have tried it out on my 2 main systems... one is a samsung X60 laptop... was a pain to get working but i got it to boot and had half ok graphics... second system is a amd athlon64 3000+ (o/c'd), asrock 939dual-sata2 motherboard, 1gb ram, 256mb 7600gt pci-e... system boots... but no sound... no network (even using a pci intel pro 100+ card) and no QE/CI... Now... i know i could most likely fiddle around to try n get it working a lil better on the desktop (or the laptop)... but i don't want to... My question is... what are the most common easily compatible parts for a hackintosh system? I'm thinking of stuff like C2D CPU, 2gb RAM, Intel 945/965 or P35 chipset (which one is the easiest to get working!?!) and some easy to get working video card (once again... what one??) Now... my problem... i'm thinking at this point, due to it being a fair amount of effort (from my experience) to get os x working on a normal pc... i should just go out n buy a new iMac (well i'm wanting to wait for leopard, but you get my point).... thing is... i'm worried about the performance of them, in particular... the video card... I do like to play the occasional game, not many as i have all the latest consoles (360, ps3, wii), but still... i'd like the ability to fire up trackmania (windows, i know) and things like Quake Wars (that is coming to mac), UT3 (yes coming to consoles, but also mac) and a few others i've heard are out/coming... will i be better off with a real mac or an updated pc thats "hackintosh compatible" (lol), what does everyone think?? I'm really lost and unsure of what to do, if i was to buy an imac i'd be going for one of the 24" models btw. HELP! (i hope i've explained everything in a non confusing way!) Thanks! Proteo
If you have the money go for the real one... you won't regreat it and even the cheapest one have a decent video card, apt for the casual gaming. Dainix
If you have the cash, an iMac is the best. Otherwise, you'll have better luck with the Intel 945/65 chipsets. Synaesthesia
Although you can enjoy 100% full compatibility with a hack. It's your call, really! Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/61095-hackintosh-or-new-imac/#findComment-433916 Share on other sites
A Nonny Moose
Although you can enjoy 100% full compatibility with a hack. It's your call, really! NO YOU CAN'T AND STOP LYING ABOUT IT. You can't apply any OS X patches without some major work into it, for instance. Nexus™ uk
i would go for the iMac, since it would be much cleaner and hack free, and with boot camp, windows can be installed easy Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/61095-hackintosh-or-new-imac/#findComment-433980 Share on other sites
KRiSX
thanks for the replies everyone seems to be the main reason to go the hack route is to save $$$'s i'm still concerned about the 2600 pro in the 24" imac though... but i think it has more potential that will be unlocked with new drivers (well.. thats what i'm hoping)... even reading some reviews of the 2600pro and xt cards there was a slight increase in performance in windows from the 7.7 driver to the 7.8 driver... so i'm hopeful that it will perform better in the future... yeah i'm a casual pc gamer (def not a casual console gamer) but i'm also a graphics whore and love games to look good with playable framerates, so i'm sure you can all understand my concerns with the current imac and its performance with games... so i'm on the right track if i do decide to go the hack route that the 945/965 chipset seems to work better then others?? what about vid cards... whats the best one i can get that will work? or would i just keep my 7600GT that i couldn't get to work in the 10mins i tried... lol it also seems that if i don't want the hassle and just want a system that works... i should just go for the imac... i do plan on dual booting with vista and also running xp through parrallels or vmware fusion in osx... should cover everything i want to do... i hope thanks again for the replies.. if anyone else has anything to add to sway me in either direction... please post it! cheers Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/61095-hackintosh-or-new-imac/#findComment-433988 Share on other sites

On legit OS X software, there are no worries in applying patches, new kernels, and new drivers and you can keep all your software up to date. With Hackintosh, you can't apply patches or install any new update for that matter without a hacked installer or something. So....get the iMac.
