hatoncat
I'm having an odd problem with 10.4.10 (not sure which variant, sorry). Basically, if I leave the system alone long enough, it crashes (kernel panic). I thought it was a sleep issue, but I turned both sleep and display sleep off... and noticed the kernel panic. Funny thing is, it usually happens an hour or two after I stop using the system. I set the screen saver to Computer Name to rule out a graphics card problem with Flurry (for some reason, disabling Screen Saver isn't working, I have it set to Never but it still loads). Searched, diagnosed, checked RAM and drives... nada. Suggestions?
hatoncat
Pulled up system.log, here's the last few lines before panic (and reboot): Aug 20 17:35:01 Core-2-Quad kernel[0]: Couldn't alloc class "com_mifki_r3d3" Aug 20 17:35:03 Core-2-Quad kernel[0]: Couldn't alloc class "com_mifki_r3d3" Aug 20 17:35:04 Core-2-Quad authexec: executing /Applications/Parallels/Parallels Desktop.app/Contents/Resources/pvsso Aug 20 17:36:00 Core-2-Quad kernel[0]: Couldn't alloc class "com_mifki_r3d3" Aug 20 17:36:01 Core-2-Quad kernel[0]: Couldn't alloc class "com_mifki_r3d3" Aug 20 17:36:05 Core-2-Quad kernel[0]: Couldn't alloc class "com_mifki_r3d3" Aug 20 17:36:07 Core-2-Quad kernel[0]: Couldn't alloc class "com_mifki_r3d3" Aug 20 17:38:02 Core-2-Quad diskarbitrationd[64]: disk1s1 ntfs 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 Vista /Volumes/Vista Aug 20 17:38:34 Core-2-Quad kernel[0]: Couldn't alloc class "com_mifki_r3d3" Aug 20 17:38:37 Core-2-Quad kernel[0]: Couldn't alloc class "com_mifki_r3d3" Aug 20 17:38:37 Core-2-Quad authexec: executing /Applications/Parallels/Parallels Desktop.app/Contents/Resources/pvsso Aug 20 17:38:50 Core-2-Quad diskarbitrationd[64]: disk1s1 ntfs 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 Vista /Volumes/Vista I know the Couldn't alloc class "com_mifki_r3d3" is an old dependency... but it appears to be causing something. I also am concerned about the Vista drive (which is a second hard drive)... but not sure why it would do that after an hour or two of inactivity... activity should cause a crash related to that, not the absence of it. Oh, and the crash was occurring before Parallels was added into the mix, so I doubt it's that.
lord_muad_dib
hmmm there's something about a parallels executable, maybe a background daemon maybe it fails on something and panics everithing the halt occurs in safe mode?
hatoncat
Like I said, the crash was happening before Parallels was installed. I have done some testing in safe mode... system still freezes with a few hours of inactivity (boot, left alone, no apps running). I really don't want to revert to 10.4.9 either since iWork '08 requires 10.4.10 (I could bypass that, but... that can cause crashes on its own). dmy
You seem to have the same computer disease as we do check these topics too, maybe we should start one topic and try to find a solution for this growing problem : http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=61342 http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=61391
