Rar files are kind of like zip files, but easier to work with. They allow you to download a very large file or program in smaller chunks...especially helpful for those still using slower telephone connections to the internet. Also, if one chuck gets corrupted during the download process, you don't have to re-download the entire file, just that chunk. In windows, they can be opened and connected together to form the large file they are meant to be by using any number of programs like WinRar or WinZip. In OSX, iRar seems to do the same thing. Hope this helps.

It sounds like you are very unfamiliar with downloading compressed files. It might help you to do a google search on the subject to get more info than you will get here. Very simply though, there are a couple of different rar formats.

One looks like this: file.rar, file.r00, file.r01......etc. In this format, if you have an unrarring program installed on your computer, all you do is double click on the file.rar and it will begin joining all of them together. If you are missing any single file, it will stop there and won't continue until you provide the missing file.

The other looks like this: file.part01.rar, file.part02.rar, file.part03.rar.....etc. Just click on file.part01.rar (actually, you could click on any part) and it will begin the same process of joining them together as mentioned above.
