Im having a serious issue with installing MacOS 10.4.8 Jas on my PC, it picks up my harddrive - but when i go to format the partition it gives me the following error (In screen shot)

I've tried all different sized partitions, fat32, ntfs, ms dos everything!

Just keeps coming up Failed... =(

Here is my hardware:

AMD Athlon x2 5200+

4GB DDR2 800Mhz

160GB Harddisk dual partitioned with XP x64 on other partition

Nvidia 7100GS

Nforce 4

Gigabyte GA-M55SLI Motherboard

Is there anyway to manually partition and format using the command function in the installer?

Here is the screen shot:

Hi , i have a similar problem , the install detects my hdd(ide) , it sees the fat32 partition , i select it on the left, select mac osx estended(journaled), click erase , it sais its erasing the disk but after it finishes the disk is still fat32. My OS is the JaS 10.4.8. I have previously instaled this OS using wmware workstion 6 and it worked just fine.

could you please help me? thanks

How big is the hard drive? Over 120gb?...

Mine is 200gb and i get this error sometime too. When i format it, it only formats and makes available 127gigs or somethin like that. And what i have to do to avoid this error is just choose to format the unpartitioned space and that fixes it all for me, it should be called disk0s1 or something similar to that if your over that fore mentioned space

its 80 gb but the fat32 partition is 11gb

have you tried formating the drive in windows? u can just boot off an xp installation disk or anything similar and format it ntfs then take it back to the mac disk utility and give that a shot afterwards

no i havent tried that , i will try it right now , thanks

LE:it did not work, maybe i need to change a setting in the bios? , i also have a sata drive conected , maybe thats interfering , that cant be because it doesnt even detect it. Is there a way i can format the partion to mac osx estended(journaled) using a windows program or a live cd program?

Don't use Disk Utility's "Erase" function, use "Partition" instead ... like so:

  • In the left column (list of drives/partitions), click the drive (not the partition) once to highlight it.
  • From the tabs up top, click in "Partition"
  • Once you're in the "Partition" tab, choose "HFS Extended (Journaled)"
  • Click the "Options" button and choose "Master Boot Record"
  • Re-partition the drive
  • Close Disk Utility

Once you're back in the installer, you should now be able to select the drive and continue the installation.

Will this work for my problem?

Will this work for my problem?

It should ... I had a similar problem on my machine, and choosing "Partition" finally did the trick. Make sure you go into options and select "Master Boot Record".

so do you go to utitlities , disk utilities, then erase, then choose hfs mac os extended , then install? dont choose partition if it gives you that error

It should be the other way around. Use "Partition", not "Erase" ... at least that's what worked on both of my Shuttles (one with an IDE drive, the other with SATA)

I tried to do that and after about an hour it get operations has timed out. Any other ideas?

Thanks,

At what point exactly does it time out - choosing a disk in "Disk Utility.app", partitioning, trying to find a disk to install to in "Installer.app", during the installation process itself?

I used Partition Magic to create the partitions and initially format them (NTFS for XP, Reiserfs for Linux, and FAT32 for Mac). When you boot from the JaS 10.4.X DVD, you can format the Mac partition for Journaled HFS+ either in the disk utility program or within a Terminal session - your choice. That was ultimately easier to get a triple boot system running than screwing around with the format utilities in Windows or Linux. When you format the partition for Mac, be sure to use the MBR option - if you don't, GRUB won't pick up that there's a Mac Partition there and you'll be forced to boot it from either the Mac Bootloader, or from Windoze XP's bootloader.

Also, I used GRUB as my OS selector rather than Acronis - - avoided A LOT of headaches that way. GRUB rules!

I have tried to partition as a fat 32, primary and logical and still a no go, I am using the upchuck 10.4.9 1.4 r3 dvd, should I be using JaS???

Well, consider me stumped. I've never even heard of Disk Utility timing out during the partitioning process. The only things I can think of are either a slightly corrupt installation DVD or some problem with the disk you are trying to install OS X on.

If you have the chance, I'd recommend re-downloading the installation DVD or attempting the install on another HD.

Sorry I can't be more helpful here

Alrighty then, thanks for all the help, hopefully redownloading will fix it.

Thanks again,

Dean
