Hi,

So I've got a very nice hackintosh and it's all pretty much working. I've got the xdeveloper tools and downloaded a few of the open source kexts from apple and had a shufty. all fairly straightforward. what I've not managed to find is any information about what each of the kext's actually does and why people like paulicat and netkas have had to patch certain texts. I mean, all the upgrade guides tell everybody to use the old AppleSMBios. Why? it's quite old now (v1.0.1 vs latest - 1.0.11). Is there a reason I can't just use the official apple version? What sort of patches are paulicat and netkas doing? just the plist.info files? or the actual code?

any help/pointers much appreciated.

Matt

here's my advice...this is fixed my issues recently....

google for "applesmbios.kext" and the 3rd link down is at rapidshare. d/l it and use it. i'm running 10.4.9 and like you, i too was having problems/issues with the older kexts. i can't describe what the different ones do but this one's been working great for me. my method --

install Jas 10.4.8 (with ppf's 1 & 2)

install Jas 10.4.9 update

copy the file above into /system/library/extensions (you have to authenticate to overwrite the other one)

finally, go to disk utility and select your hard drive/partition and 'repair permissions'

reboot and you should be good to go.

when i was using the older one's, "about this mac" would restart the gui which annoyed the hell out of me. but after discovering another thread here, i did this method and sure enough, not only did "about this mac" work, but i was also able to install CS3 web premium too. :)

thanks. I'm not actually having any problems with it, I'd just like to know what it does, why it needs to be patched and whether or not I can do it myself. To be honest, my hardware is pretty similar to a real mac, i don't have any AMD/nVidia stuff so I'm not really clear which, if any, patches I really need and which ones I'm applying just because 'everybody says so'.

Does anybody actually know or is everybody just following instructions they've seen elsewhere?

cheers,

Matt
