Eskun
Hello everyone! Today I made my purchase of a sweet white macbook! I am extremely happy with its performance and love the smoothness, but there is something bothering me big time. You see I am using a widget called "iStat Pro" which measures as good as everything on your mac, but it seems that CPUA is running around 60°celcius (No farenheit, I live in Sweden) and when I have as less as Adium, Safari and Skype on it already floats at 69° almost hitting 70! Now I have heard a lot but even for AMD processors this is crazy, so why would the dualcore do it? I heard that the intel core2duo's idle at 35°celcius, or did I possibly got that wrong..? I am kind of worried as I have been waiting long to get a Macbook and I'd rather not have things screw up now.. >_< Anyone has any information about this? See attachment for more info. See attachment for more info. hmm, that does seem a bit more than normal, on my mbp with 8 apps running its only 51º C or like 124º F. there is an app called "smcFanControl" that allows control over the speed of ur fans(link) try it out, try and set ur fans to 2000, and see if that helps Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/60222-macbook-heating-problems/#findComment-428111 Share on other sites
skyhighmac
As with any laptop, it will get hot, but yours is a lillte warmer than mine is, got mine 2 months ago. Upping the fans to 2000 to 2200 should do the trick, and the noise won't really increase. Eskun
Thanks for the replies, once I'm back in OSX I will be sure to give it a try! Right now on bootcamp/xp installing FFXI, I really love the harddisk speed, installs fast like hell! I'll report back once I test it out. ^^ Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/60222-macbook-heating-problems/#findComment-428198 Share on other sites

Eskun
OK the 2000 seems to calm the CPU down to 60/61°, but does it still mean that when I go to the city I should get my Macbook back to the Premium Reseller and show the genius' there about this heat since some say its um... Not 100% normal? Also a next question is that is there an application I can run in Windows/Bootcamp that does the same with the fan? Since playing FFXI (Final Fantasy 11 Online) makes the Macbook quite hot as well, not sure if I should worry about this. But it seems Everest Ultimate doesn't recognize a few things about the macbook which is what makes it not show the degree of the CPU. As I have never experienced the CPU getting this heat before since my AMD only got to 60° when I played FFXI but it seems intel core2duo idles at 57°/60°.. So tell me, should I worry or is it nothing to be afraid of? And Numberz, what do you mean with the battery life is about 5 min hit at 2000? @_@;; Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/60222-macbook-heating-problems/#findComment-428339 Share on other sites
EFI
That's definately not normal temps. This is the reading that I get in my Macbook Pro...just after using Photoshop CS3 under OS X, booting into Windows XP and playing a graphic Intensive game (bootcamp) for three hrs, and then booting back into OS X and then finish converting a movie in Final Cut Pro: Even after all that stress, the processor only goes up to 55 degrees celcius. On just idle, the C2D on my MBP is usually 45-50 degrees. The GPU is usually always a bit higher than the CPU, but since I just played a heavy game...this is perfectly normal temps. Is your ambient room temp already high? That could explain why your MB is running warmer than normal. It's not at the danger zone yet, but it's definately warmer than normal. Eskun
Yeah I guess the room was a bit warm yesterday but it certainly isn't now and it seems after installing Xcode from the OSX CD the CPU is kind of idle on 60°, all I have on is Adium and Safari (typing this), I think I should get my ass back to the City soon and show them.. I am running the first Macbook model on Apple's site, so lets say the cheapest one, it has the slowest CPU out of the other models, so maybe this one has to work a bit harder which explains the heat? Model Name: Mac Model Identifier: MacBook2,1 Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Speed 2 Ghz Number of Processors: 1 Total Number of Cores: 2 L2 Cache: 4 MB Memory: 1 GB Bus Speed: 667 Hmm.. After about 3 minutes since Xcode install is done the CPU went down to 54°, so I guess things are OK after all..? What are the dangerous levels of celcius for a Macbook anyway? Just in case so I can monitor them.. >_<;; Thanks for the help so far everyone! EFI
Update. This is how my MBP is after a restart and using Adium, Frenzic, Photobooth, Textmate, and Voice candy: Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/60222-macbook-heating-problems/#findComment-429007 Share on other sites
Eskun
Hmm.. I am guessing the problem on my side, gah! First Macbook purchase and it might be an error'd one! o.O;; 57°celcius idle after playing Final Fantasy XI Online for 2 hours straight and now being back on OSX for 2-5 minutes. I guess that is a positive point? That MacbookPro is incredible to have only 39°, makes me scared of my Macbook's 57° idleness.. :/ However I do find the macbook having too little place for hot air to come out though, all there is is a stripe with holes on the back below the screen, maybe thats what makes it hot? My AMD Laptop's AMD Sempron 3000+ idles at 50-53° when my girlfriend is playing The Sims 2 on it, and as you might know The Sims 2 is not really a laptop-friendly game, so without running anything it is below the 50°, so why should the Macbook idle at over 55° when it runs totally nothing? >_<;; OSX is fully updated and it did not seem to solve anything.. Right now I am running iTunes and Safari only and the CPU is 62°, the room is not warm either. >_> Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/60222-macbook-heating-problems/#findComment-429227 Share on other sites
Numberzz
oh sorry, i meant the battery life will take like a 5-10 min hit from having the fans at 2000 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/60222-macbook-heating-problems/#findComment-429237 Share on other sites
Eskun
Alright! I am much happier after a final google-search, I came across this little linky. It seems that the core2duo processors are made to even operate little over 100° celcius, at 125°celcius it will auto-shutdown as it is very critical at that moment. So I shouldn't worry about the 70° I am getting (63°-65° now as I type in Safari while installing Photoshop CS3 and listening to Frou Frou in iTunes). I hope this has helped more people than only me! Edit: Thanks for clarifying numberz! ^^ Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/60222-macbook-heating-problems/#findComment-429273 Share on other sites
SteyrTheRogue
I've gotten my Macbook Pro (SR) up to 76° C within a few minutes of Unreal Tournament 2004 (29-30 C ambient temps). The Mobile Core 2 Duo can take a lot higher temps, like Eskun said. This site lists the max temps of many processors (along with some other useful info). Depending on what I'm doing, my idle temps are usually around 47 C or 56-60 C (ambient is usually anywhere between 22 and 30 C. smcFanControl does indeed help. I was worried when I first got this, but I'm not worried about it after reading up on it. Hope I helped some at least. Fridgerator
I also own a macbook and whenever i play games or run photoshop and illustrator it hits around 65-73 degrees C. On idle or running firefox and msn, its around 48-50 C with smc running the fan at 3000 rpm.
