im fascinated that theres a whole community of people out there supporting this project and amazed that it works so well

after seeing some videos on youtube and finally working up the courage to try it out i have a few initial questions

i have a dv4170us laptop (hp)

1.73 ghz pentium m dothan

1 gb ram

intel gma 900 graphics i believe

intel 2200 b/g wireless

100 gb hd

1. ive partitioned a 10 gb chunk to a ntfs to us for the osx partition, will that be enough space?

2. i downloaded version 10.4.9 seeing how the wiki says thats the latest i can run b/c my processor only supports SSE2, but I can only find guides on how to upgrade from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9, but i want to just jump in at 10.4.9, is this possible, if so is there a guide somewhere for it

3. is there a guide for dual booting with XP not VISTA out there

4. how do i know which "packages" (i think thats the term) to select to check during the OSX install (obviously the intel over the amd) but what about the other hundreds of options

5. what is a kext?

thanks and sorry the for n00b questions, any help is much appreciated

Awesome! We're glad you joined in.

will that be enough space?

Sure. Initial installation only takes up about 4GB I believe.

The latest is actually 10.4.10. Outside of Tubgirl's AMD release, I don't think there is an install DVD made for it yet...it's pretty recent. You can download Uphuck's v1.3 off of the Green Demon...it's at 10.4.9 and from the stories I've heard, it works pretty well and comes with many third-party applications ready to go out of the box.

Yeah...you read the Wiki right? There's a bunch on there. The Darwin bootloader that installs itself when you install OSX86 can do that for you out of the box. Just hit enter when it loads and you can choose XP from there. Vista is a pain in the butt...I've tried dual booting with it and never could get it working right.

Most of those are for specific video cards. Outside of selecting Intel, I don't think you should have to worry about it.

what is a kext?

Kernel extensions. Not a 100% up to par on this, but I'm pretty sure it's ways OSX communicates with different type of devices. Sort of like drivers with Windows.

hey thanks so much for the reply

just wondering

what is "the Green Demon" you referred to

id like to dl 10.4.9 from whatever u have although i apparently have an iso image for a 10.4.9 installer, details werent included but it was from a warez forum i trust a great deal

edit: oh i know what green demon is, didnt realize it goes by that

edit 2: it wont let me download cus im not a member

anyone able to provide me with an invite, i would greatly appreciate it

Welcome aboard.

First off, check your PMs about the green demon invite. you should be able to install quite flawlessly(hopefully), but will need some 3rd party drivers. I am not sure about your wireless card however.

try that guide, and see what works out of the box. on the Uphuck DVD, some of the packages you should choose are:

SSE2 kernel(Intel or Universal)

GMA900 driver(if there is one under VGA)

and then after install, check if it works. You can still install the packages perfectly fine within OS X from the DVD after install if there ends up being some more stuff you need.

For your wifi, try googling the card name along with osx86 and just search. you should find a thread or 2 from here with people asking about the card then you will find out whether or not it works or not.
