dabla
Hi, I've successfully installed mac os x 10.4.9 JaS on my hackintosh (3GHz P4 Intel based mobo), everyting like sound and network is working fine. The display is also working fine but sometimes I do get glitches/artifacts on my desktop but when i move a window or do something within the desktop they disappear, which isn't that annoying as those appear only now and then. The real issue is when playing quicktime movies and divx. Then I can clearly see random green pixels appear in the canvas where the movie is being played (not in the surroundings of that canvas within the desktop). I have an Sapphire ATI x1600 Pro which is fully reckonized in OS X, at least I think it is (Quartz Extreme is supported). My display panel is also reckonized. Also it seems that my DVI output is also NOT supported, i have to connect it via the VGA output, which isn't much of a problem for me as my other pc is connected via DVI on that same panel. Anyone any clues or had the same issues for those artifacts/glitches? Many thanks! UPDATE: Could it be due to the fact that the card is getting to hot under os x? Apparently this may be be the cause. I've searched on the net for possible solutions to underclock the card and found ATIccelerator, unfortunatly it doesn't support the ATI X1600... Guest Ramm
Is Core Image supported? That may be causing some problems if it isn't. dabla
Is Core Image supported? That may be causing some problems if it isn't. Thanks for the reply Ramm, Core Image is indeed supported. I'm having a strong feeling that it is more temp/hardware related than software related. Still odd I hadn't this problem on windows with the same videocard. Is there any way to underclock this card on mac os? Here a dump of the information listed on my videocard: Radeon X1600 Series: Chipsetmodel: Radeon X1600 Series Type: Beeldscherm Bus: AGP VRAM (totaal): 256 MB Fabrikant: ATI (0x1002) Apparaatcode: 0x71c2 Revisiecode: 0x0000 Beeldschermen: BenQ FP991: Resolutie: 1280 x 1024 @ 60 Hz Diepte: 32-bits kleur Core Image: Ondersteund Hoofdbeeldscherm: Ja Synchrone weergave: Uit On line: Ja Quartz Extreme: Ondersteund Rotatie: Ondersteund Beeldscherm: Status: Geen beeldscherm aangesloten Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/57201-random-bizarre-artifacts-on-desktop-and-movie-playback/#findComment-409189 Share on other sites
Guest Ramm
Does your computer have a BIOS temperature reading? Check it and see if it is way too hot. dabla
Temps in BIOS are following: cpu: 55°C/131°F zone 1: 37°C/98°F zone 2: 41°C/105°F Could te problem be PSU related? It's a SUNTEK 300 Watt, still estimating the weight of the CPU it seems to be a quality one, you can't lift it like the cheap one. I'm wondering because now and then when I do F9 to have an overview of the open applications, the desktop freezes... U.C.
Hmmm, how old is your card?? Have you recently tried cleaning it?? Does it require external power via Molex Connector? I had a 6600GT and it had similar weird problems. so I removed my Power connector and booted. It worked fine. I even played Rainbow Six for an hour or so. But when I quit the game, there was a message box on screen saying "Card is not getting enough power........". So I plug in the molex power connector, still same "Card is not getting enough power........." Then I took my plier and tightened the metal things of the molex connector and plugged it in. It works perfect ever since. Thus three reasons it can happen 1) Dust/Heat 2) Not enough power/loose connector 3) Old card -> dying VRAM Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/57201-random-bizarre-artifacts-on-desktop-and-movie-playback/#findComment-412531 Share on other sites

My card is now MAX 1 year old, and have played BF2 with it on Windows XP till I converted this pc to a hackintosh without any glitch. The configuration is completely the same as when running Windows, except the PSU, DVD-R and HD. So maybe the PSU could be the reason. And yes I did recently "clean" it before it was used for the hackintosh. I tried to boot without the extra power connection/molex, but then the whole screen is weird (same colours as when I get the glitches). I know that this is possible with a GF 6600, as I have on myself on my other system, but this is unfortunately not an option here for the X1600. Maybe its a power issue, I should test it with another PSU to be certain. dabla
Ok, I've bought a new PSU, namely a Cooler Master iGreen Power 500 Watt, still same problems so it can't be power related anymore, seems that my first thought of too high temps was correct... Is it possible that the fans arent running fast enough? What can I do? Are there possible drivers that could help? dabla
UPDATE: Seems DivX playback is without any problems/glitches with the DivX Player, but still glitches/artifacts with quicktime. Anyone any clue why the difference?
