ethernet config problem

My problem is obviously ethernet doesn't work. I tried This and what happens is everything freezes up. I have gotten it to work before but I don't know why it worked or really how I did it.

 

I have a Dell Optiplex 280

Pentium 4

3.00 ghz

onboard ethernet

I am running OS 10.4.8

 

(I checked the wiki page for gx280 and what it said was unhelpful "Did not get onboard ethernet working, but didn't try very hard because I had an Intel Pro/100 handy.")
