Hey, been trying to run OS X86 jas 10.4.6 install dvd for a couple of days now and finally (thanks to dilnalomos tutorial) i finally got it dual booted with my xp machine (one hard disk) using acronis boot loader. As with other dell machines (check the wiki) my sigmatel audio didn't work, but apart from that everything including my ethernet worked perfectly. There were some new updates up so i decided to get them they were...

1. Java for mac (cant remeber exactly)

2. iTunes 7.0.2

3. 10.4.8 update (300mb) <<< was this the problem?

After i'd finished these updates it asked to reboot so i did.

Bios loads

Acronis boot loader starts

Click to start Mac OS X

Nothing happens for a second then pc reboots back into bios and goes in a continuous loop :S

When i downlaoded the updates i assumed it was ok because the installer dvd contained a patch called "10.4.6 Combo Update" and i thought it would allow me to update my mac properly with a pc.

Am i right when i say thats where i slipped up?

Will i be ok as long as i dont install that 10.4.8 update (300mb) next time?

Thanks much. :P

You would be correct in saying that. Big updates like 10.4.8 require you to go an alternative route. Methods are spread out all across this forum. Next time software update prompts you to install a big update like that, dont' do it. Better yet, double check on the forums.

Hi everyone.

FYI, I had 10.4.7 running beautifully on a Dell Optiplex GX280 (per forum instructions, thank you everyone), and I too applied the 10.4.8 update and killed my OSX. Just goes to show that us noobs should read the form before clicking anything...
