Jak08
I got this as an email response "This email is in response to your recent query regarding the monitors for the Developer Transition Kit. The output from the video adapter on the Developer Transition System is a digital signal only. The connector is DVI-D and therefore does not support analog signals which is required by VGA monitors. There is not an adapter available to convert the DVI-D connector to a VGA connector. Apple's 20" and 23" DVI based flat panels are supported displays, as well as many other 3rd party digital flat panels with a DVI-D connector. With the Apple DVI-ADC adapter, you may attach a 23", 22", 20" ADC based Apple display to the Transition system. We hope that this information is useful to you. Please let us know if you need any further assistance." I am wondering if the transition kit is capible of having a vga compatible graphics card put in it. While I have never seen an Apple DTK up close and personal, the SIMILAR Intel motherboards that some of us are using (me included), have a motherboard VGA connector AND support a DVI adapter made by Silicon Graphics like that on the Apple DTK. In my case, with the DVI adapter, BOTH the VGA and DVI adapters have video, so dual monitors are supported, albeit one VGA and one DVI. While the GMA900 "shared memory" video has its limitations, both core image and quartz extreme are supported on my system. The one decent picture of the back of and Apple DTK I found shows a port layout somewhat different than the motherboard I'm using (Intel D915GAG), and NO VGA connector. See attached. My questions would be: Is there perhaps a VGA connector on the DTK, but unaccessible...just needs an corresponding opening in the case back panel ? If no VGA connector, are there solder pads so that you can install one....perhaps not a great idea on a leased/rented DTK, and maybe a violation of agreement with Apple ? Now back to your original question, I would think that the DTK would support either a PCI-E video card OR a PCI video card...like my Intel D915GAG. The shortcoming is that you'll be in the same boat that we are, with no video acceleration (including no quartz extreme & no core image) until suitable drivers are available. grabberslasher
The DTK does not have a DB15HD(VGA) connector nor solder pads for one. You must use (buy if need be) a digital monitor with a DVI-D connector. An adaptor to connect to VGA will be well over $250, and it would be cheaper to buy a 19" Dell LCD (good quality) or similar which has the DVI-D.
