jglavin
I have never noticed this Pref icon before, and lo and behold it knows something about my CPU. Does everyone have such a thing? CoolBits
Yes with CHUD tools... Does your OSX run ok with CHUD tools installed? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/39589-system-preferences-processor/#findComment-282447 Share on other sites

jglavin
Oh yeah, didn't even think about that. I installed Devtools a week or so ago, and haven't been in the CP since. Haven't had any issues as yet, at least that I've noticed. Rock solid! The panel itself doesn't seem to do much. The only thing I can do is uncheck the "Hyper Threading" box, which doesn't look to disable anything, since both processor graphs continue as normal. Perhaps with a restart, but why would I want to? consolation
Well... hyperthreading tries to make a single CPU act like dual by passing work to execution units that would be idle. However, this is only a benefit in heavily mulit-threaded apps and can, under certain circumstances, reduce performance because the original thread can become starved of execution units. I think quite a few ppl here found that OsX became more stable with HT off. Additionally, it poses something of a security risk according to http://www.daemonology.net/papers/htt.pdf -in essence one thread can monitor others and be used to steal crypto keys etc. It is also ridiculously energy inefficient compared to a dual core design. All in all the fact that it has been dropped from all current Intel chips indicates something... jglavin
Thanks, I didn't know about that stuff! Jeez, I should read up on my own hardware.
