mlmorg
Hello everyone, I am new to osx86 and I am a bit overwhelmed. First of all, there is a lot of information about the whole process and I have learned A LOT. The problem I am having is that there just might be TOO much information. I have been looking for days trying to figure out the best way to go about installing OSX on my custom AMD Athlon 64 3200 with Asus A8n-sli deluxe board but to no avail. After learning that my computer seems compatible enough, the next step is which patched DVD to download, there are sooo many. Should I follow macadell.com and get the generic JaS 4.2b osx 10.4.3 image, or should I try the new JaS DVD that was posted on Demon just a few days ago? The problem I am finding is that there are soo many tutorials, but many are outdated and might not be the best option for me. Also, most of them are hard to understand (probably just because I'm looking at them and haven't tried anything yet). The best tutorial I have found is the one on Macadell. It seems very easy and straightforward there, but does that still work with the new JaS image? It seems like many of the new images need more patches and different install setups to get everything right. What kinds of things do I need to look into before installing? Also I have one SATA drive and an external. Is there even a way to install to either of these? If anyone could shed some light or maybe even direct me to a nice easy guide I would be so thankful. Thanks, Matt Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/38293-overwhelmed-and-need-some-questions-answered/ Share on other sites

Thanks, Matt Get the latest JaS image for 10.4.8 AMD/Intel SSE2/3. Get the ppf patch for it too. Remember to click on the "customize" button during the install... This is an adventure not a tried and true install. It may take you one two or several installations to get where you want to be. And even when you are done, it will be a work in process. If it were just a fire and forget process, this forum wouldn't exist. Have fun and enjoy the ride! wow
I installed it many times to get things working. To learn you can always begin with the easy 1043 and when that works and you experimeted a lot with the os, you can try the next ste a new 1048 jas dvd. mlmorg
Hey, Thanks so much for the replies. I was just wondering what the ppf patch is called for the new jas image? I've never heard of a ppf patch before...is it the same as the 8.8.1 kernel (and do you apply it AFTER the install)? Also, I have WinXP on an SATA hard drive (Athlon 64 3200, A8N-SLI Deluxe) and I also have an external firewire drive. I can get an IDE drive if need be...Is an IDE the best option to install OSX? It seems so...and if that's the case, will there be any problems/conflicts with the SATA and IDE drives when one has XP and the other OSX? I have read on other forums that it's kind of hard to get SATA and IDE drives to work well together...so I don't know if that will be an issue. And finally, is installing from DVD the best option or is VMware better/easier for a first timer. Thanks so much for the replies, I am probably going to be using this guide: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...+machine+create as it makes the most sense to me...good option for the new JaS image and my SATA IDE config? Thanks again, Matt Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/38293-overwhelmed-and-need-some-questions-answered/#findComment-273809 Share on other sites
Chief9999
I have the same board but I have a 3800+ x2 chip If your going for tiger go for the uphuck 1.4a no the 1.3 Mine ran stable for months. Umm never really had good luck with the sata but I have heard of users who got a sata pci card and had no problems. Ue a ide internal drive and the FW as a storage drive.. Your going to have to patch like 15 or 16 things to make everyting work with jas ( no offence bud) but you can do it i one night if you have already installed it Good luck quote name='mlmorg' date='Jan 11 2007, 03:08 PM' post='273809'] Hey, Thanks so much for the replies.
