From a hardware standpoint, there isn't an easy solution.

All iMac's use some sort of internal connector to connect the screen to the logicboard, there is no standard vga or dvi input in them.

Or you can buy a used lcd screen off ebay and make the notebook whole again.

Why the hell are you going to risk electrocution in order to make an iMac a second monitor for ANYTHING? Monitors are pretty dang cheap on the resale market anyway so get one of those.

I AM NOT going to modify my iMac in a way that oculd break it, I was hoping for some simpler solution like an accesory that going into the DVI port that would do this, I only want to turn the laptop into my own .mac server

If all you want is for it to be used as a server, don't waste your money on fixing the display. If you want to use it as more, get a display!

But if a server is all you want, determine the type of display out the computer has and get a tv adapter, just temporarily. Then turn on some kind of screen sharing/remote desktop app and take it from there, controling the laptop from your other computers.

What kind of notebook is it?
