Fast, painless and tiny (1.61 GB) sequential OTA update from macOS 26.4 to macOS 26.5 beta 1 (25F5042g).

There is no KDK yet for macOS 26.5 beta 1. OCLP 3.0.0 Nightly (amfipassbeta variant) works flawlessly with Kernel Debug Kit 26.4 (build 25E246) from macOS 26.4. AppleHDA, Wi-Fi and AWDL are fully functional. The same likely applies to OCLP-Mod 3.1.7 and OCLP-Plus 3.1.8.

Are there major macOS 26.5 beta updates still to come?

Cheers,

KGP 👍

I applied the wifi and AppleHDA root patches with OCLP-Mod 3.1.7 but after a reboot the system was dead slow... something in OCLP-Mod 3.1.7 may not be fully compatible with this version... I removed the patches and the system is back to normal, of course... no AppleHDA audio or Wifi.

I don't have the OCLP nightly build to try and can't seem to find it anywhere ...would you mind sharing a link?

Thank you,

D.

@Dragster27 Others have reported sluggishness after the latest Tahoe update.  Give your hack some time to finish applying the new update and indexing in the background.  You may find that the problem resolves itself.

EDIT: Note that the reported sluggishness is independent of OCLP.

You can try OCLP-Plus 3.1.9 (Tahoe Patch Set) with the -amfipassbeta boot argument.

Thank you @deeveedee  Well, this behavior continued to show even after leaving it on for a while indexing in the background and after reboots... but it seems it's been sorted out now that I booted in safe mode and installer the nightly build of OCLP... thanks for the advise tho!

I did, thank you. It appears to be fixed now after booting in safe mode and installing the nightly build of OCLP... can't blame OCLP-Mod though... it's been working just fine until this update came through.

Thanks again,

D.

I installed this update and encountered no issues after applying OCLP-Plus 3.1.9 (Tahoe Patch Set) with the KDK for macOS 26.5.1 (25F5042g), which was downloaded during the root patch process.
My only gripe was that Clover_r5172.pkg still doesn't have its icon.
That's why it was immediately removed.
I'm no longer bothered by update reminders. I disabled it with sudo launchctl disable system/com.apple.softwareupdated
After setting the SIP value to 0xfff
If there is a request to disable updates, I can integrate it directly into OCLP-Plus (Tahoe Patch Set). 😉
See screenshot 1 and screenshot 2.

I can confirm the exact same behavior on my side.

The update initially went through without any issues and reached the login screen. But right after that, the WindowServer started crashing repeatedly and login became impossible. I also noticed that the boot process suddenly became extremelyslow — on my Haswell system it normally takes only a few seconds.

In the end the only solution was rolling back to 26.4, where everything works perfectly again.

So this definitely doesn’t seem to be an isolated case. My guess is that Apple changed something significant in the graphics/WindowServer stack in the recent updates. For now it looks like we’ll have to wait for upcoming builds.

I'm not seeing any Tahoe 26.5 Beta issues on multiple hacks

  • 10th Gen Intel / UHD630 / MBP16,2 / no OCLP / OC 1.0.7
  • 9th Gen Intel / UHD 630 / MM8,1 / no OCLP / OC 1.0.7
  • 8th Gen Intel / RX 560 / MM8,1 / no OCLP / OC 1.0.7

but it doesn't surprise me that some will see problems with the first Beta.  For those who are posting problems with the update, it would help if you posted your system specs (CPU, graphics, SMBIOS, whether you're using OCLP, Open Core Version).

EDIT: On all of my hacks running Tahoe, I have the following System Settings:

  • Accessibility > Display > Reduce Transparency: Enabled
  • Accessibility > Motion > Reduce Motion: Enabled

EDIT2: On my iGPU-only hacks (no dGPU), I have set my wallpaper to a simple color (least GPU-intensive option).

I'm not seeing any Tahoe 26.5 Beta issues on my 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700KF
bat, it is important to keep OCLP-Plus (Tahoe Patch Set) up to date.

@Zevgoli I feel a sense of deja vu ;)  Here are a couple of things to check:

  • Why do you have ' csr-active-config ➣ 03080000' in your boot-args?
  • What are your expectations for using Haswell graphics in macOS Tahoe without OCLP graphics patches?

I would like to know this as well I know its a binary trick to decipher what it means, but there's I see here he uses 01000000 uhh and I know of the

070F0000 key ....... all Feature_Levels that could've changed at any time 03080000 being like a amfi_helper in the sense that it disables authenticated_root_disable

and whatever else is required to boot or that on a normal Mac it had these on a foreign Mac it doesn't so you require the key that could be.. or that the key changes from Version to Version that could be also.. and it works hand in hand with the sm_bios_properties also

anybody see the grey screen and slow boot and slow show the desktop everytime login ?

Yes, I've experienced the same behavior here with this version...

BTW, Does anyone know/have the URL to the full installer of this version?

Cheers,

D.

I had some time to play with Tahoe 26.5 Beta trying to reproduce the "Gray" screen that some are seeing between the login prompt and appearance of the desktop.  On my 10th-Gen Intel laptop (Intel iGPU only, no dGPU), I was able to see the gray screen when playing with wallpaper settings.  I use static "pictures" or simple colors for wallpaper on my iGPU-only hacks.  When I changed the wallpaper to one of the "fancier" wallpapers, I did observe a gray screen for a moment after login and before the desktop appeared.

For those who are seeing the gray screen before the Desktop appears and who are bothered by that, you may want to experiment with other Wallpapers to see if that resolves the issue.  Setting your desktop wallpaper to a color should be the least GPU-intensive option.

I have been trying over the past two days to somehow install 26.5 beta.  I have three SSD's dedicated to achieving this.  However I have not been successful.  Installation continually gets me the installation was successful to Tahoe click continue screen then to log into my apple account which fails.

I have also experienced the grey screen with nothing on it as mentioned above.  I have tried to use my USB installer to reinstall the OS.  This seems to work but when it completes I get the Tahoe day wallpaper screen again with nothing on it.  I don't use these wallpapers.  I have tried downgrading the USB installer to an earlier version of Tahoe but in the end I get the same wallpaper screen with no options.

I have been able to clone the affected drives via Disk Utility to get around the USB failure.  It's very strange indeed.  Things are on hold till a full 26.5 RC comes out.  Not sure what to do about the USB installer.  It has always worked before.

The sluggishness that I reported after installing beta 4 persists every time I reboot and I have had some trouble with my laptop rebooting supposedly while it's sleeping.  When I wake it from sleep after it rebooted, it takes forever for the laptop to become responsive to my controls and usually requires another reboot.  None of this happened with beta 3 or earlier.  I continue to suspect that beta 4 introduced one or more significant changes "under the hood" that makes it much less compatible with my laptop's hardware.  To be honest, if Tahoe is the last version of macOS that works with Intel processors, I may consider reverting back to Sequoia, which works much better with my hardware than Tahoe.

Yes.  I think it's the same with my Optiplex 9020. It's getting a bit long in the tooth and Tahoe is becoming more out of reach the more it progresses.  As of now 26.4 seems ok outside of the slow graphics which can't be helped.  But as I have mentioned 26.5 is giving me problems in beta form.  I think I'm going to mainly wait for the full release as see what happens.  As I mentioned above I have three SSD's dedicated to Tahoe and I will use one for further experimentation and leave the other two.
