SaberSHO
10.4.8 (99.5% pure) for SSE2 Install Guide (for Intel chips) This guide is intended for sse2 users wanting to upgrade to a full 10.4.8 system on a intel processor. Im not sure what additional steps, if any, need to be taken for AMD. IF any amd users have any tips, please add them to this thread. These steps work for my install, some additional kexts might need to be swapped around depending on your chipset and hardware. 1) Start with a 10.4.6 JaS install dvd. In theory you could also use a 10.4.4 or 10.4.5 Install, but i have not tested that yet. If you do, make sure you do the addiotanal delta updates....... 2)....speaking of which: Assuming you start from 10.4.6, you are going to need the 10.4.7 delta update found here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/mac...e1047intel.html and the 10.4.8 delta update found here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/mac...pdateintel.html you will also need Paulicat's SMBIOS found on his blog (some people will need the IOATAFamily.kext from there as well, might as well dl to be safe) and of course the latest kernel available in the #kernel channel on IRC (Download of kernel temporarily disabled...) also required is Pacifist 3) Install JaS 10.4.6 selecting the nesesarry patches needed to boot (intel sse2 and 10.4.6 combo) on a clean install ( if you didnt DL everything before or only have one hard drive/partition, get everything you need now...) 4)boot to your new 10.4.6 install 5)time to back up some files. This will depend on your install. I recomend making a backup of ApplePS2Controller.kext, since i had issues with the 10.4.8 one. Other kexts to backup might depend on your install. kexts to backup just to be safe: ApplePS2Controller.kext AppleAPIC.kext AppleACPIPCI.kext <add to this list> To be on the safe side, why not just backup all your extensions That way if i forgot something, you can just fix. However, everyone should back up their loginwindow.app. it can be found in /System/Library/CoreServices. The gui should still boot with the 10.4.8 loginwindow, but about this mac will not work. 6)install pacifist 7)mount the 10.4.7 delta update you downloaded earlier and right click the .pkg...select open with... Pacifist. Right click on the pkg name at the top and select "Install to default location". 8)mount the 10.4.8 partition and repeat the above instructions. NOTE: Some people are reporting problems with using pacifist to install. There shouldnt be any problems in just running the installers, just make sure you dont click restart till you have restored your needed kexts and added the kernel as outline below. 9)now, make sure you dont reboot! 10)first..copy exp6 to the root of the drive. in terminal type the following command mv /s5 /mach_kernel this will make the new kernel your default kernel (thanks to Hellomonkeys for the tip 11)Now, navigate to extensions and remove the following 2 kexts: AppleIntelcpupowermanagment.kext IOPCCardFamily.kext 12) restore your backed up ps2controller.kext and any other kexts you need. 12optional) If you dont have a mobo with ICH7 or 8, replace your IOATAFamily.kext with an older one or Paulicats... 13) navigate to system/library/coreservices and replace with backed up loginwindow.app 14)launch diskutility and repair permissions on the drive 15)reboot. Enjoy a almost perfect sse2 system...see the following screenshot http://sse2kernel.googlepages.com/sse2.jpg I really hope i didnt forget any steps...And again, this install worked for me. Once i boot to gui, i was able to install Titan and get full support on my 6600 GO. BTW, this is all on a 1.86 Pentium M 750. I hope this guides helps out, and please feel free to ask me any questions if i havent made it clear. <---hehe..dont know if these are new, but they are pretty funny..... edit:added some kexts and a suggestion to backup all old kexts before doing any updates to be safe edit2: Some users are reporting problems wiht installing the updates via pacifist. It worked for me, but if you want to just run the installer, it should also work fine. Just make sure to leave it open and not click restart until you have replaced the nescarry kexts and added the kernel. Thanks to OSX86Geek for the tip. Prasys
ATM the kernel does not support CPU Throttling , so it will take sometime ! dvdemecillo
hi SaberSHO, this is very nice. btw, i'm just curious...is there a special reason why you did not start with a JaS 10.4.7? thanks. helios
Didn't work for me... had a working EX5 install.. Follow each step until finder crashed after 10.4.8 update. Tried to repair permissions in terminal diskutil repairpermissions / but it just gave me a error message. So after a reboot it wont boot to gui and no luck to get a prompt with -v -s or -x -v -s.... what can i do now? This is what happens to me, not my picture though.. SaberSHO
superkryo- now that i have a working system and testing has slowed down, I will be looking into the CPU throttling...i might be able to persuade semthex to compile some code into the kernel to try and get it working...not sure tho dvdemecillo- lol, ummm I didnt have a 10.4.7 install dvd? heh....i work with what I have helios-it might be a problem with ACPIPlatform and APIC...im going to add those kexts to the list of possible ones to backup. as for your install, maybe try to boot an install dvd to restore to older versions of those kexts...I have to go to bed, but if you find me on IRC tommorow i can try and help you out Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/35783-1048-995-pure-for-sse2-install-guide/#findComment-254773 Share on other sites

Fernando Birra
Acpiplatform and apic was restored before reboot. Do I need paulicats smbios? I used my old one. Why don't you try it and post the results here? did you read the exp6 readme? Read it carefully... CyberTron
Hey, this works pretty good, although, when having installed the updates (10.4.7 - 8) the whole system stops responding to commands, which means that adding the kernel is not possible..and also leaves the system unbootable (if saying yes to replace mach_kernel. so maybe we should change the order ? johto
I had done the longer route with this guide. Now with exp6, i just slapped the Apples Intel Combo using its own insaller, and re-replaced the Paulicats AppleSMBIOS.kext. That was all i did, rebooted and it made two reboots and system works just fine! Even better, because my score on QE/CI openGL jumped from 77fps to 120fps ! W00t ! ACC0RD22
could I do this from a working 10.4.7 install? or is it strictly from a 10.4.6 install. Mr. Bond
In theory, it should work perfectly fine from a 10.4.7 install. You'd simply skip the 10.4.7 Delta update setp, I'd think. Looking forward to getting this all installed later this week. Good guide! helios
Success after many trials and errors. Thanks to OSX86Geek on IRC! This way worked for me: Clean JaS 10.4.7 DVD install, back-up the kexts and loginwindow. Run the Apple 10.4.8 update. Dont reboot, remove the kexts mentioned above and put in the kexts menioned by SaberSHO. Use Paulicats smbios.kext and move the exp6 kernel to root. Repair permissions and reboot. This worked for me... Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/35783-1048-995-pure-for-sse2-install-guide/#findComment-255165 Share on other sites

SaberSHO
com3 - no, you will need at least 10.4.4 to be safe. it MIGHT work from 10.4.3, but i doubt it. Grama- kexts are in /System/Library/Extensions. you can either do it from the terminal (prferred method), or use the gui to drag and drop em Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/35783-1048-995-pure-for-sse2-install-guide/#findComment-255254 Share on other sites
