You will need the following windows tools:

ATI Tool (for dumping your bios)

ATI BIOS Editor by Alex Yakovlev

ATI's WinFlash Utility

1) Take ATI tool and dump your bios. (I recommend you make a second copy of this file for backup)

2) Open up the bios editor and load the bios you just dumped in the prior step. Note the basic resolutions and default refresh rates, in my case they were all set to 60hz. Change to whatever values you find acceptable. Save your modified bios and exit.

3) Use ATI's WinFlash utility to program your new bios.

4) Reboot into OSx86 and enjoy your crisp video.

Note: Using the methods mentioned above will void your cards warrenty and could possibly render your card unusable. However, should something go wrong, you can usually bring your card back to life by booting your system with a PCI video card and reloading from a backed up ROM.

Good luck!

WinFlash is in chinese...

Which button do I press to not destroy my stuff?

EDIT: Hmm... it's flashed properly, even with the "Cannot flash same ROM twice!" message. Doesn't seem to be working on my end.

Did you get the WinFlash utility by ATI? It can sometimes be difficult to find.. I'll post it for you.

Keeps rebooting... Should I do this in safe mode or something?

EDIT: Nope, got it working perfectly now! Refresh in Mac OS x86 is now 85hz! Before flashing, you have to disable fast write.

Good job! :(

Kaz, thanks for pointing out the fast write issue. I didn't realize this would be a problem, as I always leave mine off for compatibility.

Hmmn.

I can dump my X800XL BIOS with ATI Tool OK. But the ATI BIOS Editor by Alex Yakovlev doesn't seem to support later ATI cards.

I tried to open the BIOS file with RaBiT v1.7 and got the message "BIOS CRC is wrong!".

I wonder if anyone has stumbled across problems like these before and perhaps found a BIOS editor that opens the X800 series BIOSs OK?

The 60Hz is giving me a headache ... :D

I would like to use this method too. The 60hz is really hurting. But unfortunately, ATI Tool disables the dump bios button "because of a bug" on the Radeon 9200. I've been looking all night to find another tool that can dump the BIOS on my 9200SE (128MB), or some factory BIOS. Allthough it is pretty important to have it as a backup, it is necessary to perform "Step 2" (changing the refresh rate). Does anyone know of another tool, or a place where I can get factory BIOS dumps?

EDIT: Found a BIOS. If anyone can't dump their current BIOS, try a BIOS from http://www.techpowerup.com/bios/. Almost any BIOS is listed there.

Hi, i have a radeon x850xt. i dumped the bios without a problem, changed the refresh rate bon it but when i try to execute winflash it says "this utility does not support this graphics device"what should i do, is there another way to flash my x850xt? thx

well, you are happy people... ati bios editor it is not working for me. I have a x800 gto (r430 core), and I have no qe or cl... the driver it is not working for my card (I was try first modifying only the ati9700 kext, - and my monitor turn off instead of gui, then i have modify the ati9700 plugin....., and i get only a mouuse workin on the top of mac boot screen), and I was thinking that at least to give a high refresh rate , but nooooo, ati bios editor when I try to load my bios it complain that is a incompatible bios... so no edit for refresh rate..... I am stuck at 1280x1024 with 60 hz, and my eyes are burning like allways on the mac... so pleas, any other sugestion , a bios editor that is working or any other way to make-it work ??? If I try to boot with 1280x1024x24@75 i miss even the graphic boot, it is looking like then when i boot in safe mode, but without gui or so on ,,,
