Reports of lackluster sales of Microsoft's Zune that surfaced earlier this week might be a bit premature.

New numbers from a market research firm indicate that Microsoft (MSFT) surpassed SanDisk (SNDK) as the No. 2 vendor of MP3 players behind Apple (AAPL) during the week of the Zune debut.

For the week ended Nov. 18, Microsoft had a 9% unit share and 13% dollar share of the U.S. portable player market, while Apple had 63% unit share and 72.5% dollar share.

"Microsoft attracted early adopters in a successful launch week for Zune, eking out SanDisk as the No. 2 digital audio player vendor," NPD's Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis, said in a statement. "This was especially impressive given the Zune's single capacity configuration and relatively high price point."

Microsoft shares added 21 cents to $29.60 in recent trading on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Apple slipped 19 cents to $91.62 while SanDisk shed 84 cents to $43.93.

See, now that we have real data (As in, not just Amazon.com and a story from Digg where someone checked ~4 stores nation wide) we start to see what's happening and it's not what people have been saying.

I just thought it'd be good for people to see this. :wallbash:

Edit: This thread is to discuss sales, not whether you like it and so on.

Go 9% of units sold! Woo hoo! I see the iPod falling already. ;)

What's really sad is that these were essentially all of the people who have been waiting to run out and buy it once it was released. Now that the initial "storm of customers" already have theirs... how are sales going to be now?

Please stop being so unenlightened and short-sighted. Microsoft knows this is a long (As in, years) 'battle' and have openly said so, built their strategy around that and have also said they don't plan on 'conquering' the market. :\

So, they know the iPod won't fail and they know they won't completely overtake it, like in the console market, they know they can't just overpower and remove Nintendo/Sony but they are now a major competitor in that market.

John, how do you know that all of these where people who were waiting to 'run' out and buy it ? ;)

Meh, I knew there would be people who would try and downplay this, oh well, their loss. ;)

Microsoft must be desperate to come out with their own device .

And if it Failed ,Flop big time.Game Over,Microsoft will never recover.

The Windows Media Technology will wither and die.

If Microsoft Zune happen to go down as to become Microsoft biggest Flop ever

It will definitely kill Microsoft Windows Media Technology.

Because this is an uneventful time for the iPod. No new products/updates, etc compared to the PRODUCT LAUNCH of the much anticipated Zune. So you are comparing hyped Zune purchases to average iPod sales. It looks much worse from that perspective.

If it were a Hollywood film it would be a flop on opening weekend. The XBox launched better than this and it still bled money for the first year or so. This will be a hard, steep climb for Microsoft.

Meh, I knew there would be people who would try and downplay this, oh well, their loss.

How so? I feel no loss. My iPod still rocks. I see this as it is, a lackluster product launch. Maybe it will get better? Who knows. I don't see that as very successful at all though.

As much as I hated the Zune at first, I must say - it does a very good interface ... not as good as the iPod's but very good overall. And the 3" screen is nearly perfect for viewing music videos or movies on the road or before class.

Zune isn't pefect; and right now - it doesn't really pose a threat to the iPod. But it's not bad considering it's Microsoft's first attempt in MP3 market.

Robotskip, I've long since ignored you as a user, so, thankfully, I won't be able to read your response, but if you're here because you want to defend Microsoft, or even praise them, then you're in the wrong forum, sorry...

In case you haven't noticed already, the response you get is not going to be exactly positive, and it's going to stay that way until you go a good long while without saying anything about Vista or Zune or Microsoft in general.

Like, this Zune thing, you're defending a product that is just obviously terrible, and almost all critics, for PC, Music, general digital device, or Mac magazines, completely agree, "it almost becomes important that you encourage people not to buy one." (Chicago Sun-Times, URL here.)

Have fun trashing my post, I won't get to read it. =P

katmail, stop copying/pasting that silly, inaccurate, ridiculous and clueless reply.

snackole I haven't bought one and this has nothing to do with whether someone likes it or not (Hence why I specifically pointed that out in my first post), it's simply to show how the people running around on here [and elsewhere] screaming 'the Zune has little to no sales' are lying.

I'm glad basically all of you failed to read the original post in it's entirety, you're yet to disappoint me. :dev:

Is there a way to prevent a thread from constantly appearing on the "view new posts" page? (Esp. this one, sigh..)

Edit: Is there any chance that you're interested in running Mac OS on your PC, robotskip? That is the main goal of this site, but I've only seen you talking about Zune & Microsoft.

Zealot, this guy love Microsoft. Ok, that is fine and I respect that, but when others that love Mac/OSX post their opinions (like lostgame said) and we get torn down. He personally attacked me way back in a post where I said nothing against him. Well I attacked him back, and made an ass of myself. Now, I block him and leave him be. Let him be a fanboy, but he should be mature enough to realize his is on a Mac site and to not get bent out of shape when we don't bow to his opinion.

This has been my opinion, NO personal attack, and since I don't have to mess with robotskips reply, I am done.

...like every pointless fight that robotskip seems to start?

Every word in this sentence is a different article is another criticism of the Zune.

robotskip, I can safely say...

Stop trying to do a pathetic job backing up your worthless points when it's clearly a one-sided issue.

To quote you in a sickeningly ironic way, this is how I choose to finish my post:

See, now that we have real data (As in, not just Amazon.com and a story from Digg where someone checked ~4 stores nation wide) we start to see what's happening and it's not what people have been saying.

Case closed. Pwned.

Zune was dead the moment Microsoft wrote the first memo even suggesting competition for the iPod. Like the Xbox program, it will operate at a loss until it's simply left to rot out in the Redmond sun. The price will probably drop to $199 just before Christmas, and then even lower after the 1st of the year.

Microsoft could care less, really. They're just trying to put a dent in Apple and it won't work - it's not working and they know it. So it's another basket case project for Microsoft, another chance for them to eat their own dogfood yet again.

Sad, really. But come January, with what's about to happen at MacWorld, w00t... fun times do lay ahead.

I'll wait till Zunes are around $100 and I'll grab one just to have a collector's item.

:(

Yes, ME is a perfect match for the Zune, hence my previous post "Zune: Microsoft repeats ME all over again."

ME was, in concept, a good idea, but failed everywhere else. It was a good idea, that's it.
