NVMe boot SSD + dual OS partitioning questions

3 posts in this topic

Hey all!

The Macbook Pro I used as my main computer is on its last legs, so I decided to cobble together some components I had from other builds into a “new” Windows machine. Thing is, even with some settings modifications and tools like RocketDock, I still miss the behaviors and aesthetic of my Mac ;c

So, I’ve decided to pursue grabbing a new cpu/mobo/ram combo and building a Hackintosh/Windows hybrid machine. I had a couple questions regarding my boot drive, though.

1. If the motherboard I select supports booting from an NVMe/PCIe M.2 SSD, can I boot macOS High Sierra from it? Will it necessitate a tool like Clover to do so? (I'm currently eyeing the ASRock Z270M Pro4, if that's relevant)

2. If I partition this drive into two parts, can I format them separately for each OS- e.g. HFS+ on one half for macOS, NTFS or exFAT for Windows on the other? If not, can macOS be installed on an exFAT drive?

Yes, of course.

Yes, you can partition your SSD, half in HFS+ or APFS (but I suggest to avoid APFS, at the moment there is too less support), for High Sierra and half in NTFS for Windows. An extra partition or another Hard disk in ExFat for Data, available with both OS.

MacOs can't not be installed in ExFat formatted volume.

Will it necessitate a tool like Clover to do so? (I'm currently eyeing the ASRock Z270M Pro4, if that's relevant)

Yes, it's necessary or MacOS will not boot. Choosing right mobo is essential. Asrock z270m Pro4 is a very good choice.

Bye :)

      Hi!

Please help - cannot install mojave on the gb z370n wifi, 8700, 2x samsung 970 nvme, rx570
Downloaded latest clover and kexts and installation hangs at the beginning.
Got some errors at boot (during clover boot, before menu appears) then boot "Mojave install" and then it stuck. Please help. Tried to turn off all fixes, tried old apfs.efi instead of apfsdriverloader - all with no success. Maybe it's a known issue and I'm just doing something completely wrong?

      Salve ragazzi!
Dopo molti tentativi sono riuscito a fare hackintosh con High Sierra. Ogni sistema operativo ha il suo Hard Disk.

      Scheda madre: AsRock B85M (UEFI)
      Processore: Intel i5 4460
Scheda Video: Palit GTX 960 4 GB
Ram: 2 schede HyperX Fury 4 GB ognuna.

      Ringrazio in anticipo!

I think, at this point converting to hfs+ is out of the question, Apple has been pushing the apfs file policy very aggressively, so does anybody solved the missing "Boot macOS from Mojave " (this last word may be different). I have installed the latest clover in HDD and USB, but I can only see 3 Mac Os related tabs but not the one for actually loading the Mojabe mac OS. I updated high sierra to Mojave and everything went fine. My laptop (Dell E6530) booted up normally, Mojave system loaded up, I finished the setup and spent sometime exploring. I updated clover to the latest version and turned of machine. When I restarted, I noticed Clover did not have an option for booting into the system like High sierra had it. I tried adding the apfs.efi or the ApfsDriverLoader-64.efi driver to the clover efi folder in the HDD and also tried with a USB clover installation and the result is the same: No boot option for the Mojave OS. I used the recovery option and I was able to explore the partion where the system is located but that´s as far as I could go. Does anybody has an idea of what happened?
