[VMware] "An error occurred installing macOS"?

2 posts in this topic

Recommended Posts

Hello there! I'm trying to install High Sierra in VMware Fusion for a command line driven Vagrant box, in order to make it easier to compile applications for macOS. I actually managed to automate macOS installation entirely with PC-compatible keyboard input in https://www.packer.io/, so that's pretty cool I guess. Unfortunately, the boot after SetupAssistant fails:

Trace

Installing: About 15 minutes remaining

...

Installing on "Macintosh HD"

...

An error occurred installing macOS. To use Apple Diagnostics to check your Mac hardware, shut down, press the power button, and immediately hold the 'D' key until diagnostics begins.

Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again.

Restart

System Specs

  • Guest OS: macOS 10.13 High Sierra
  • Host OS: macOS 10.13 High Sierra
  • Hypervisor: VMware Fusion 10
  • Physical hardware: mid-2013 13" MacBook Air

Configuration

VMX: https://gist.github.com/mcandre/df4a69809afb8103ef37ae32371c6e23

ISO generation scripts, packer configuration, and VMX settings are available as a work-in-progress "macos" branch in my packer templates repository:

https://github.com/mcandre/packer-templates/tree/macos

Mitigation steps attempted

I've already tried:

  • Re-generating the installer ISO image.
  • Re-running the packer VM build.
  • Tweaking VMX settings.
  • Disabling SMC (which results in a VM that never finishes booting).
  • Increasing virtual RAM to 4GB.
  • Specifying the virtual hard drive as a solid state drive.
  • Using VirtualBox (unfortunately, packer sends the wrong scancodes to VirtualBox for macOS guests, so packer + macOS guests + VirtualBox doesn't integrate very well at the moment).
  • Pressing 'D' during boot (no change in behavior, no diagnostics displayed).

If anyone else has experience getting macOS to boot in VMware, let me know how the VMX configuration can be improved, or if some kind of SMC toggling intervention is necessary to get the thing to boot better. I've already tossed so many hacks and workarounds into the mix that I'm starting to run out of ideas :P

I'm new to hackintoshing, so I'm not sure if I'm missing some critical VMX configuration, or perhaps if High Sierra introduces further complications compared to earlier editions of macOS. Or even if an alternative EFI bootloader (Clover?) is necessary, I just don't know. I'd prefer to install macOS with as vanilla/default a configuration as possible.

Hello I'm Sagnik Ganguly, I'm trying to dual boot macOS 10.14 and Windows 10 (already installed) on a PC with Legacy BIOS. I've two hard drives one in where the windows is installed and another which is converted to GPT to install macOS Mojave 10.14 with a partion of Mac OS Extended (Journal) or APFS but when I went to the Install Disk Selection page, I'm selecting the partition but it says "This version of macOS 10.14 cannot be installed on this computer." can you help me please?
      P. S. My motherboard doesn't support UEFI.
I'm attaching some pictures of the screens.

      Hi everyone,

I'm having issues, I was able to install Catalina, but now for some reason I cannot boot into my system or reinstall Catalina again. I keep going over the same process and it either booting to a black screen  and I can still see the moused pointer or circle with slash. I'm just having issues and I really want to get this machine going. If anyone here that has the same hardware or close enough that would be willing to share their EFI folder, it would be gladly appreciated.

I really need help, I have other ways we can message directly to transfer files and chat faster. Thank you for looking.

      Hi,

I'm rather new to Hackintosh and trying my first build with OpenCore on AMD, but I run into issues causing OpenCore to crash before even loading the macOS installer. As I'm not sure which one is causing the crash, I'm trying to resolve all of them and one of the error messages has to do with WhateverGreen, which I was able to see in this slow-mo loading video. Basically I'm getting an error that I'm running an unsupported processor, even though I think I was following this guide by the step.
What could be causing this and what do I need to do to resolve it?

      CPU: AMD Ryzen 2700X
MB: Gigabyte Aorus X470 Ultra Gaming
Memory: 4x8 GB HyperX Predator, 3000 MHz Cl15
Storage: Samsung Evo 970 Nvme 512 GB, Crucial MX500 500GB SATA
GPU: MSI Radeon RX580 GamingX 8GB

Simple steps to create macOS Installer for Vmware on Linux or Windows

This guide describes how you can create a Vmware image (vmdk) for installing macOS in Vmware. Most tutorials about this topic require an ISO installer file that was typically created in macOS or you have to download some preinstalled image file from unknown source. None of them are ideal. But if you follow the steps below, you will not need to access macOS and will use official and trusted sources.

First of all download gibMacOS from here and set up
      https://github.com/corpnewt/gibMacOS
Run the script to download the full macOS installer:
on Linux: gibMacOS.command on Windows: gibMacOS.bat
      Install qemu-img converter

      on Linux (Debian or Ubuntu):
      install qemu-tools package

      on Windows use this installer:
      https://qemu.weilnetz.de/w64/
when you run the installer, it is enough to select the "tools" and "dll library".

Convert the downloaded BaseSystem.dmg to Vmware image
run the following commmand in that directory where BaseSystem.dmg was downloaded (somewhere here: gibMacOS-master/macOS Downloads/publicrelease/061-44387 - 10.15.3 macOS Catalina)
      on Linux:
      qemu-img convert -O vmdk -o compat6 BaseSystem.dmg recovery.vmdk on Windows:
      c:\"Program Files"\qemu\qemu-img convert -O vmdk -o compat6 BaseSystem.dmg recovery.vmdk
Use the previously created image to install macOS in Vmware

I assume you have a patched and working Vmware already. If not, find another guide but in nutshell:
      - confirm the VT-x is supported on your Intel machine (if you are on AMD you may not able to virtualize macOS or you need to do more work)
      - install VMware Workstation or VMware Workstation Player (free for non-commercial use)
      - use an unlocker to patch the Vmware to support macOS guest
       currently this works well: https://github.com/BDisp/unlocker/

So when you are here you have a patched Vmware and a Vmware image (recovery.vmdk).
Run Vmware and create a new virtual machine by choosing macOS guest. But add another hard disk as well with selecting to use an existing virtual disk. Browse the recovery.vmdk. You will get a warning about the image is not in the latest format but choose to keep the existing format.
After you installed the macOS, install the vmware tools as well.

Tested on Windows 10 with macOS Catalina 10.15.3 in Vmware 15.5 Player
