marliwahoo
I was just curious about which kernel is fastest. I know that speed is NOT the only aspect important in kernel building. I am not trying to start a "which kernel is best" war. I would just like to know if there is speed to be gained here. With that said, I have used the original 10.4.4 kernel, mifki's and semthex's 8.8.1 kernel. I don't see any real speed difference on my system. For me all three kernels xbench was between 116 and 118. No kernel scored below 116 and the 10.4.4 kernel scored the highest (118.9 - one time) I'm sure I could have gotten the other kernels that high had I just kept trying them. Really, for me, no difference.
Infamous
10.4.8 (mifki) is working faster for me. Rosetta is much faster, more responsive.
mrbig
me too here, mifki running great, but depend of your hardware...
marliwahoo
Yes, rosetta is clearly faster with both 8.8.1 kernels.
errandwolfe
For me Mifki was slightyly faster, plus on Semethex (sorry bout butchered spelling) the system clock does not keep proper time. With that kernel I lose about 12 minutes per hour.
semthex
There can't be a big diffrence in speed between base kernel, since most patches made won't affect speed (please note I am reffering to base, not recent developments). The only diffrence might be meassurement since I use HPET->RTC which results in a diffrence of 0,000001 to 0,000000001. Now you may guess how much reasonable diffrence this might cause in meassuring which is human noticeable. Most speed issues occure ebcause of diffrent compile platforms and or wrong settings. Clocking problems are nown and you may want to use a furture hpet selectable version.
boo50
+ 1 for Mifki's kernel. because of my full compatibility with it's ver. of kernel. (HPET+NX) and i can see what my system works faster than with previous 10.4.4 kernel. more stable - no more Safari crashes(i like this browser), and smoothly! and sure Rosetta now works times better! i use excel a lot and with old kernel it was unusable with big files- tooo slooooow, now i can work with this files with no problems.. zimba
+1 for Mifki
fabioxx
Hi, I thank semthex not because he wrote in this 3d, but only because I can use only his kernel with my system. With Mifki's one the system boot in loop. I used first "bad" dvd iso from JaS but don't know how to verify the presence of new kernel running, only I read in system profiler System Version: Mac OS X 10.4.8 (8L2127) Kernel Version: Darwin 8.8.1 I tried running vlc ppc 0.85 version viewing a divx film and opened word and excel, also power pc applications: no crash at all, but this is a poor test. How to verify if the new patched kernel is installed? Bye.
marliwahoo
I think my boot time is a little better with the Semthex kernel.
