johnniecarcinogen
According to their website 2007 has: New 3D desktop support (AIGLX and Xgl) and a new tool to configure it (drak3d). We are the first distribution to provide easy access to both technologies so that the hardware compatibility is as wide as possible. drak3d also features auto-detection of the best 3D solution, it choses between AIGLX and Xgl, either on KDE and GNOME. Another interesting feature is the inclusion of the Cedega engine to play your favorite Windows games. A quick search at one of the better torrent sites provide the 2007 powerpack version if you'd like to evaluate it. Or grab the free version from their official site: http://www.mandriva.com/en/linux/2007 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/31623-mandriva-2007-supports-xgl-and-aiglx/ Share on other sites
aquanutz
I've always likee Mandrake and ran it from v7 - v9 until I got my PB... I'll have to toss that on one of my hard drives. Thanks for the info. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/31623-mandriva-2007-supports-xgl-and-aiglx/#findComment-220318 Share on other sites
sev7en
I tried this distro and it doesn't work on my laptop... Fedora Core 6, instead, worked like a charm (AIGLX). johnniecarcinogen
I was curious to see how easy Mandriva made it to use one of the '3d desktops' so I tried it out. During installation you are asked if you want to install the proprietary driver for your video card, which is nice. After installation, if you go to the "configure your computer" (not to be confused with 'control center' on KDE) and go to the 'hardware' section you will notice a '3D' option that will give you this window: I chose xgl, rebooted and it did work: I tried to install WoW using cedega while using the XGL server just to see what would happen, and it did not work ofcourse. But cedega installed WoW fine when i didn't use XGL. Bottomline: A great way for anyone that is not familiar to try XGL or AIGLX without having to configure anything or install any drivers on your own. BRP
Not bad, but I didn't notice any option for NVIDIA's AIGLX equivalent... I wonder how that works out if you have an NVIDIA card but don't want to use Xgl for your compiz. (not that I'd run anything besides Gentoo anyway, but...) johnniecarcinogen
I have an ATI x1600 thats why AIGLX wasn't available for me. But yeah, I wiped this off of my harddrive after an hour of use. Mandriva is not for me either. I wonder how that works out if you have an NVIDIA card but don't want to use Xgl for your compiz. (not that I'd run anything besides Gentoo anyway, but...) NVIDIA and AIGLX work fine together. I run AIGLX + Beryl on Ubuntu on my DELL D620 which has an NVIDIA NVS 110M graphics card. solaar
I'm running 2007 with AIGLX (see my specs in the sig). There are just a few minor flaws but it's really solid, as opposed to 2006 where I had some serious issues. Everything installed out of the box just like the doctor ordered it, apart from the usual hassle with newer TV cards - but that's a general Linux disease anyway. To my taste Mandriva's package repository is (almost) flawless. You name it, it's there. No crashes so far... BRP
NVIDIA and AIGLX work fine together. I run AIGLX + Beryl on Ubuntu on my DELL D620 which has an NVIDIA NVS 110M graphics card. Okay, so they just use the wrong name. (NVIDIA doesn't actually use AIGLX, they implemented their own version to simplify the matter) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/31623-mandriva-2007-supports-xgl-and-aiglx/#findComment-226413 Share on other sites
