Rammjet
OSX only supports Intel and VIA SATA controller chips. OSX does not support nForce4 SATA controller chips. A few people have hacked the AppleVIAATA.kext and gotten nForce4 SATA to work. But they also suffered data corruption and had to give up on using the nForce4 SATA. VMWare works because it is a simulated computer running under Windows. OSX communicates with VMWare which then communicates with Windows and that communicates with the SATA controller chip. Under VMWare, you are using the Windows driver for SATA. Find a PATA hard drive for your OSX installation.
