Hard drive not found by disc utility

Hello... new here so don't shoot me if this has been asked. I tried searching to no avail.

I'm installing OS X on a Compaq SR1650NX according to these instructions.

I have a Windows NTFS partition as well as an unallocated (hopefully soon to be Mac) partition. This is on a 250GB SATA hard drive plugged into the mobo.

I popped the OS X DVD into the drive and it starts up into the installation just fine. But when I try to format the drive via the Disc Utility, none of the hard drive partitions shows up in the list.

So, any workarounds or is my SATA controller not supported? Any possibility of installing on an IDE and then mirroring it back onto the SATA drive?

Thanks.
