B_ogbrush
I'm about to start a G5 ATX Hackintosh mod. I would like suggestions for the placement of the ATX power supply. I've seen plenty of case mods but there does not seem to be a consensus on the best place to locate the PSU. I will be using a full size ATX motherboard and a Lian Li motherboard tray. Also has anyone managed to install a couple of 120mm fans on the inside of the case behind the front grill? if so can this be achieved so the front grill still looks stock? (how do you mount the fans) Suggestions welcome. MiniHack
First I just want you to know i am biased as I run the laser hive. Second though, I also wanted you to know we do make a 2 x 120 fan support and a 2 x 140 fan support which is from folded brushed aluminium. The 2 x 120 has fan spacing to suit radiators like the Corsair 100i. Here is the link Hope this is useful! We also make loads of other stuff and will be soon launching online store (until now ordering is by email). I put a discount code on Insanely once the online store is up. 1 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/305243-g5-case-atx-mod-psu-and-fan-suggestions-needed/#findComment-2126418 Share on other sites
mac09hack
I recently rebuilt a 2006 G5 mackintosh into a hackintosh. I used the older G5 as a starting place to modify. I found a perfect ATX motherboard mount at MountainMods.com. It fits inside the G5 exactly as needed. It has the backplate for the 7 PCI slots and fits the ATX motherboard perfectly. I first removed every thing from inside the G5 (Motherboard -CPU- Power Supply. etc. The MountainMods ATX mount uses two 80MM fans on the back plate. zeppfrog
I have done two. On one, I made a tray for an ATX PSU and hanged it toward the front, below the dvd. Painted it gray and stenciled G5 on it, til I get a single g5 cover for it. The tray acts as a shroud as well, but all my fans go out the front. Not for everyone, but nice n cool. On my latest, I rewired the original 600w mac to ATX. tedious. I WOULD like to see someone carve down an ATX PSU Case and fit it all the way back to the mesh in the drive bay. You could attach the fan to the mesh and either run your cable connector out back at the top or cable it down to the bottom. You likely wont be able to leave the back of the PSU intact, I think most fans are too high for this spot, but cut it off and there's plenty of room for it there. As far as the back of the case, I did full atx and matx. Both cases I used rear i/o panels from donor boxes, in the full atx I also used the tray, in combination with the cover for the missing original PSU, I didn't need to mount the tray to the case itself. It was riveted to the I/O and I added a couple screws to the lower cover. Then, to finish it off, the PSU cover gave it more rigidity. Both Mountain Mods, and Laser Hive have good options, also some Lian Li case parts will do nicely, I enjoyed the challenge of going low-buck and raiding my parts hoard. Here is the MATX i just finished up today Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/305243-g5-case-atx-mod-psu-and-fan-suggestions-needed/#findComment-2201633 Share on other sites
