Mac Mini Restarts frequently after RAM (memory) upgrade to 8GB

10 posts in this topic

Recommended Posts

I have a late 2012 Mac Mini i5 Dual Core which came with 4GB RAM, been using it since December '13. I decided to Upgrade the RAM (Memory) to 8GB and bought 'Two Corsair Value Select 1600 MHz' 4GB RAM sticks and upgraded it to 8GB about a week and half back. Currently Running Mavericks 10.9.3

Since then I have experienced that the Mac during some youtube videos, hangout video calls (Chrome Browser) etc crashes and I get the 'Grey Screen asking me to press any button to Restart screen'.

It happens atleast once daily sometimes twice. today it happened a lot.

I've checked the 'About Mac' memory tab says 8GB with both sticks working fine. Even ran a Apple Hardware Test this morning and got a clean result.

Can anyone help me with this? thanks

are you sure its a memory related problem?

check the "console" app for any Kernel panic related problem and post it back here,

btw usually when installing new ram modules, its better to try them one by one, and then plug both if there isn't any problem... :)

I thought it could be related to Memory since i had upgraded recently.

Allan,

Have you reset the SMC?  You can re-install the OS but have to be online.

Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
  3. Wait fifteen seconds.
  4. Attach the computer's power cord.
  5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
  6. If the problem continues go to #7
  7. Use the built-in recovery disk to reinstall OS X while keeping your files and user settings intact.
  8. Important: You must be connected to the Internet to reinstall OS X.
  9. Choose Apple menu > Restart. Once your Mac restarts (and the gray screen appears), hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys.
  10. If you’re not connected to the Internet, choose a network from the Wi-Fi menu (in the top-right corner of the screen).
  11. Select Reinstall OS X, then click Continue.
  12. Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select a disk, select your current OS X disk (in most cases, it’s the only one available).

Do you have the original RAM? Try using that before the steps I listed to see if the if the new ram is the cause.

When I got my 27" iMac and installed 32 GB RAM I put in the two 4GB sticks from my iMac (faster RAM) but it worked fine for my wife's Mac Mini.

Ciao,

Lou Cioccio

Hi Lou Cioccio, how you doing?

Thank you for that explanation.

But who is having the problem is the user @stephndsz.

We will wait he comes back, and try what you said.

Bye  ;)

Dumb question, but ... if I already have these kexts installed to /L/E:

      AppleALC.kext
      FakeSMC.kext
      IntelMausi.kext
      Lilu.kext
      USBInjectAll.kext
      WhateverGreen.kext
      XHCI-unsupported.kext

Do I also need to copy them to Clover/kexts/Other when upgrading from 10.14, and then delete them ( as they are not currently in Clover/kexts/Other)?

And do I need to set config.plist/SystemParameters/InjectKexts=Detect so that Clover will inject all applicable (depending on version) kexts in EFI/Clover/kexts/Other only if FakeSMC.kext is NOT in kernel cache.

      Hello,

Here I am looking for the answer of new Mac OS Catalina features and what type of Mac will support this new Os??

      Hi,

I've just upgraded to OSX Catalina from Mojave on my VMWare Workstation 15.5, running on Windows 10.

The Sidecar feature is there, and after connecting my iPad Pro 12.9" 2018 running iPadOS 13.1.2 via USB cable, it is recognized as a display device in the Sidecar preferences.

However, when I enable it, the Sidecar screen on the iPad is completely black / blank. I can't send anything over, and if I mouse over the green + on an app window (i.e. Safari) to move it to the iPad, nothing happens and the screen remains blank. The sidebar will only appear after I turn it off and on again at Catalina's Sidecar preferences. The buttons there actually work. For example, if I move Safari over to iPad, the screen is blank, but if I activate the on-screen virtual keyboard and type there, the text actually goes to the Safari's search bar (the Safari still appears on the desktop).

Is this a compatibility issue with VMWare, where Catalina can't properly recognize the second screen? I've tried changing host VM settings too, i.e. to "host setting" or 2 monitors, enable / disable 3D acceleration, nothing works. the iPad is definitely correctly connected, as I can browse / backup its data at the Finder.

Can anyone please advice on how to enable Sidecar properly in VMWare? Thank you.

Below is a screenshot of how it looks like on my iPad:
