Apple Cinema Display User Survey

Using an Apple Cinema Display with a Hackintosh or just a regular Windows PC can be a bit hit or miss. Depending on various factors you may not be able to get a signal to the display before the OS loads, or in the worst case, get a signal to the display at all. However, certain setups seem to work without a hitch.

Essentially I'm trying to confirm some assumptions I've made after reading through a bunch of reports in different threads. I'd like to better understand what sort of hardware configurations are compatible with these displays and try to put together some rough guidelines for getting the best experience with them. But there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer to any of them. The assumptions are:

- Kepler based Nvidia cards work and can in some cases properly display bios

- Fermi based Nvidia cards work but can not display bios

- AMD cards are hit and miss

- UEFI based motherboards may garble the bios interface, but only on pre-2010 displays

- Adding a second non-ACD display may in some instances allow mirroring onto an otherwise unsupported ACD during post

I'd help me out if ACD owners could answer the following questions:

1. Which model of ACD are you using?

2. What graphics are you using?

3. What port (eg. DVI, DP, mini-DP, HDMI) are you using and, if applicable, what adapter?

4. Does it work once an OS has loaded?

5. Can you see anything during post i.e. can you see your BIOS/ UEFI during startup?

6. Do you also have a second non-ACD display connected?

My answers:

1. 2010 27-inch

2. Nvidia Quadro 4000

3. DVI with Kanex adapter

4. Yes

5. No

6. No

Cheers.

Here:

Mavericks 10.9.1

1. 2010 - 27 Led Cinema Display

2. XFX Radeon HD 5770 Single Slot model: HD-577X-ZMF3

3. port: Mini DisplayPort

4. yes

5. yes, Bios

6. No

Update: lost mini displayport signal with Mavericks 10.9.2

Update: 10.9.2 update Fixed with:

<key>Graphics Mode</key>
<string>2560x1440x32</string>
<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>AtiConfig</key>
<string>Vervet</string>

Now I'm looking for a card with Mini Displayport, possibly a HD7950 or r9 280, for a new hackintosh.
