Try turning off hyperthreading in BIOS.

During boot, as soon as the screen turns black, start tapping the F8 key quickly and repeatedly until a command prompt appears. Enter cpus=1 at the prompt.

If that works, you can enter that parameter under Kernel Flags in the boot.plist.

You have to time the F8 tapping just right or you miss it.

As soon as the screen turns black, start tapping. Don't just tap once or twice. Tap like crazy like you were trying to kill monsters in a game.

Leaving out the Intel Combo update will mean that you don't get the latest version of OSX (10.4.6 or 10.4.7, depending upon which you are installing). And I'm pretty sure it won't solve your problem.
