@Somez: Booting into safe mode is pretty easy so I would suggest trying that before the clean install; however, a clean install is often a good idea if I've learned anything from my Windows days. Here is the article that gave me the safe mode suggestion: http://brettterpstra.com/2017/10/20/have-you-tried-rebooting/

For what it is worth, my freeze problems have seem to disappear after trying safe mode. Fingers crossed!

Ok, I have tried booting in safe mode (at the bootscreen press spacebar and select safe mode and boot it that way) then reboot it to normal mode and it seems to be working well, it is been 4 days without random freezes so far.

After booting once in safe mode and after that rebooting seemed to do the trick.

I will report again if it is stable or if it freezes again.

Seriously?? It did not work for me, but since then I've reinstalled from scratch so let me try it again.

tluck,

Earlier you said that using the Sierra HD3000 kexts under High Sierra you've not seen any freezes on your machine with the stock LCD. Is that right or since then you've got freezes with that setup as well?

Just tried command log show --predicate 'processImagePath contains "kernel" ' | egrep -i "pmrd|graphics|brsync" to see if I find anything suspicious from the recent days and found a few interesting items, like these:

Yeah. been trying all sorts of things short of replacing the LCD

I tried the Sierra 10.12.6 HD3000 kext set and that was no good. got BRSYNC and hang.

I tried increasing VRAM to 1GB - no diff

I tried reduced framebuffers to just 2 - LCD/DP  - no diff

So now i am trying the Sierra 10.12.5 HD3000 kext set. 23 hours and no problems. time will tell.

Yes. I replaced my cracked AUO 1600x900 screen with LG 1600x900 screen (a thing of beauty by comparison) Note: if you upgrade ie go from 1368 to 1600 you will need to replace the inverter/cable thing too.

Let’s say I replace the LCD :)

How much is that LG display? Where can I order from? Is it very difficult to replace or it’s screws and some patience?

Thanks.

The T420 is a cool device for maintenance! Many laptops are much much worse!

50 eur... I’ll think about it. Can you recommend any reliable sources it’s safe to buy from? I’m not certain about ebay...

I agree this machine is easy to fix. I’ve already replaced the heatsink so I have some experience.

My machine is 1600x900 by default so I should have the cable already I guess.

How did you do it?

My Sierra installer does not allow formatting or even repartitioning my main HD. I guess that's due to the APFS filesystem.

I booted a linux live stick (live cd works the same) and used geparted to remove all partitions.

Thanks for the tip. I don't have any other usb sticks around except the one used for macOS Installation so I'll stay on High Sierra for a while then.

Maybe tluck will figure out something with the Sierra HD3000 kexts...

My T420 had so many crashes while searching for a solution that a clean install was a important first step. I hope someone finds a solution so I can upgrade to High Sierra.

Now I'm back on Sierra I notice some differences compared to High Sierra. Power management / sleep works again! Battery now shows actual level. When I (dis)connect the power cable the laptop beeps. Could be I messed that all up while testing....

Update to 10.13.4 went fine.

Hopefully, it has less system freezes.

I don't want to draw a conclusion too early, but this update fixed all my problems. No more freezes or visual glitches. Even the fan spins a lot more around 2000 RPM.
