I'm learning this myself. I just have a tendancy to overthink things.

Most of us just assumed that the sata portion of the gigabyte (a.k.a. JMB363) didn't work because the IDE part didn't work. Or atleast I did.

I leave my PCIe stock. Before I sent in my board I was hitting 2.69, hopefully with my replacement I'll get higher. I'll find out for sure when I get my replacement ram in the next day or 2.

I'd like to add that with the HD on the Purple Gigabyte sata set to AHCI, the OSX jaz 10.4.7 installer see's the full size of the HD. But with a dvd-rom hooked to these ports won't allow the install disc to run.

Currently installing from an IDE-SATA converter on a DVD-rom with Jas 10.4.7 (connected to the Intel ICH8 ports), to the HD set on Gigabyte sata ports. Seems to be going fine, hopefully my little script will work for installing the ati video/883sound/restart fix.

Where's ConroeMac? I'd like for him to update the first post to let people know the situation.

lol;lol

It was just luck, i know nothing about kext or mac. Their not comon in Brasil.

Another good surprise is my overclock from 1.8 to 3.01. stable till now

Trully amazing! Valeu Diegão!

I can't get it to work for me...

Tried both of the purple ports... :2cents:

How long does it take you guys to boot?

it only worked for me using a sata disk, I tried with an ata+adaptor and it didnt work. Loads fast, I didnt time it. Also no need to modify anything on kext. Adaptor also doesnt work with DVD/cd, I had to plug it back to the regular sata with the adaptor.

In my system PCIe and FSB are separated too.. but if i dont accelrate PCIe a little i could not get a good FSB overclock, i got auto too and when auto is on it just moves the pcie alongside the FSB, so be carefull there, i understand the maximum safe for PCIexpress cards is 117.

BTW We are talking of overcocking here so i recommend all you guys check this post:

Great!!! I love the purple sata ports! I connect the sata hd to the ports and set the mode to be AHCI in cmos. It works fine at the speed it should be.

Then I try IDE hd combined with sata-ide converter, and DVDROM combined with sata-converter

the ide hd could can be shown in disk utility, but only the disk itself, no partition. If I try to erase or partition it, a message "I/O error" is given.

The DVDROM connected to the purple ports with converter does not work too. When booting, "com.boot....." shown.

This is getting really annoying... I can't figure out why it isn't working for me... :(

Well, to be fair, it isn't not working, it's just taking too long to boot. I have left it for 10 minutes, and it's not doing anything... :P

SABR, your not trying to use an IDE drive are you?

Here's whats up...

1)Hooked SATA seagate HD to purple Gigabyte ports. SATA converted dvdrom to the Orange ICH8 ports

2)Went into the Bios -> integrated peripherals -> and set onboard sata/ide device to enabled.

3)Then the setting below it "onboard sata/ide device ctrl mode" to "ahci"

4) saved bios settings, rebooted into osx.

It fired right up. Then went ahead and tried re-installing osx, and that worked as well. 100% unmodified jas 10.4.7 install dvd.

SABR: being a mod, if you get this to work, could you add a nice little bolded update to ConroeMac's first post about this? This way people trying to find this fix can get it easier than digging thru 4+ pages.

Well, thanks for that, exactly how I had it configured. I can reinstall it using this method and see whether it's any better.

Also, good idea. I'll edit ConroeMac's 1st post, hopefully he/she wont mind! :)

SABR, you should also disable the first item on bios screen related to sata (sata native mode 0-3 = disabled)

Ain[t u guys feelin happier today. Lol

I am creating this thread as a conversation for all Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 users. Other related Gigabyte board discussions are welcome.

1. Installation may be done on the GA-965P-DS3 natively by purchasing a PATA to SATA converter. You need to convert the a PATA DVD-rom drive into a SATA cable. The onboard PATA is not supported!

2. Sound and LAN do not work out of the box on this board. Both show promise and I hope this thread will grow to show that both can be fixed. Let it be known that both the sound and LAN which are present on this board have fixes already on other boards.

My personal experience is that I purchased Linksys Wireless G PCI adapter (wmp54G). This adapter is NOT the broadcomm chipset. It, however, does seem to be supported through the RALink drivers. I have attached those drivers below.

I'm currently not interested in fixing onboard LAN, (though I am pretty sure it is possible) but if you get it going it would be great to note it here.

NOTICE

A solution has been found to solve the SATA Read/Write speeds! I will sum it up here, as described by thedguy on page 5:

1) Hook up your SATA Hard Disk Drive to the purple Gigabyte SATA ports.

2) Your PATA to SATA converted DVD-R needs to be plugged into the orange ICH8 SATA ports. If you are using a PATA to USB, ignore this step, and carry on.

3) Change your BIOS' settings, in the Integrated Peripherals section, to have SATA Native Mode: Disabled, Onboard SATA/IDE: Enabled, Onboard SATA/IDE Device Control Mode: AHCI. Save and exit. If you are using a USB DVD-R drive, make sure that Legacy USB Storage Detect is enabled (not sure if this is necessary).

4) Boot from the OSx86 installation DVD or your HDD, and you should have full SATA Read/Write support.

If you have any problems with this, be sure to reply here and we will try our hardest to help. Good luck! :)

is there any diference between SABR and Diego mobos?

this mobo GA-965-DS3 appears to be my next mobo!!!

Only worries me the SATA random speed in xbenchmark, wich HD are u using?

Someone have an asus eax siltent x1600xt?

how much can you overclock?!!!

this is something now!!

@ Diego:

I have tried what you are all saying - it is not working... Just to install, it said 2 hours and 53 minutes!

I have no idea why it is doing this, but it is... However, becuase of this, it's going to make me fix the ICH8 ports, and I'll get them compatible! :D

There has got to be something we are missing with your setup. Mind going into detail about what you got, whats hooked up where, and the bios settings?

Ok.

250GB SATA HDD hooked up to Purple SATA port. PATA to SATA DVD-R hooked up to orange ICH8 ports.

SATA Native: disabled, Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode: AHCI.

There really isn't anything else I can say about it. I have a Western Digital Caviar SATAII HDD, 250 GB, split into two partitions. OS X and XP boot properly (not that that is of any help). Not sure what else to say... System specs are in my sig...

I am going to try and get ICH8 working on the yellow ports once this new OSx86 installation is done (in a couple of minutes).

What else do you want to know?

EDIT

BIOS version is F5. Should I downgrade to F4?

I'm stumped. I've seen it working on an F4 bios and using a Seagate SATA drive.

If I can get a response in the asus p5b thread (2nd post):

http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=27202

We might be able to get ICH8 working better. He claims to have it working, but that doesn't work for me, and I can't figure out what device in windows or *nix he's getting that ven/dev id from. Hopefully he'll see my PM.

Well, I have been trying all sorts of different cobinations (as in 0x28XX8086) and not having much success. As I showed you in the picture, I have managed to get ICH8 to be recognised by OSx86, it just isn't using it, if you know what I mean...

I have F5 and mine works fine with a Seagate SATA 320HDD with two partitions XP and JaS10.4.7. This is and installation that I had before the whole purple use come out hot. Have anyone succeeded installing osx after connecting the hd to the purple connector or are all of us using previously installed OS? I remember that I didnt install any ViaATA kext during installation, just the intel and ss3 support and the radeon x1000 support.

aberracus: My HD is Seagate SATA 200G 7200.9. I don't think the perfermance of ramdom access is satisfying when i get the the result. I test a Powermac G5 (2.3GX2, WD SATA 250G, 1.5G ram), get the result

Uncached Read 136.19 25.27 MB/sec [256K blocks]

compared with the Powermac, the perfermance is not too bad. the value 0.**MB/sec is normal.

I have not tried overclocking to avoid uneccesary interfering.

Guys have you tested the Temperature monitor ?

" I really tried hard to find a working program to check my mobo temp under osx, and i give up, obviously our sensors arent the same the Imacs or Mac Pros use, so... until yesterday, i was reading a post http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?sho...erature+monitor and Sniks said as it was the most common thing in the universe were to get the Holly grial of the overclokers, a Universal program to check our HAckintoshes temperatures under OSX.

Here is the Link

http://www.bresink.de/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html

and the Widget

http://www.bresink.de/osx/TemperatureMonitorWE.html

When the progrm runs first time recognizes the system as an OSX86 "Extended" and installs extra sensors!!!

In my board it works perfectly but in some dont work at all, i am thinking that mayybe is a thing with the conroes?

thanks for helping!

ok I made a nice little script for getting the audio to work on the DS3's.

No idea if this will work with other Gigabyte boards with the alc883, but it's worth a try. It's sloppy, and an insult to scripters everywhere, but it works.

open a terminal and "sudo nano audio" (no quotes)

copy and paste the code below into it

press ctrl+oand then

exit with ctrl+x.

run "chmod +x audio" (no quotes) then

type ./audio

reboot.

sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
