Hello, all!

I have recently constructed a hackintosh out of the following components:

Antec 183 v3 case

Antec CP850

Gigabyte Z68X-UD5-B3 (F3, I think)

i7 2600k

Gigabyte HD 6870

Corsair H60

Lite On DVD drive

Vertex 3 SSD 60gb

Spinpoint 1tb

I am running 10.6.8

I have the corsair fan facing out of the case with the radiator behind it, and another fan running at a constant speed (the one that comes with the case) on the other side of the radiator (push/pull). Then I have the other fan on top of the case blowing upward at a constant speed. So, all three fans are blowing out of the case.

The website where I got most of my information (http://nofilmschool.com/build-a-hackintosh/) explains that, with slightly different hardware, at full load, the temperatures of the CPU should be below 70 degrees. When I use CPUTest and max out my processor, It gets up to 80 degrees easily with the constant fans set to low. higher speeds don't seem to make too much difference, and being that I'm using this as a movie editing rig, I need a quiet room to edit at times.

I've been putting off dealing with this particular problem for a little while as everything else is working well and nothing really maxes out my CPU right now, but I have a new problem. When I run some of the more graphics intensive games, my monitor loses signal, and it never comes back. I have to turn off the computer by pressing the power button and turn it back on to get visuals back.

So the questions:

Can I cool my processor off any more by reversing the fans, or doing some other combination? Does 80 degrees seem hot for the 2600 at full usage? It can get hotter. Does the shutting down of my 6870 seems to also be a temperature issue? iStat Pro does not list the temperature of my graphics card. Could this also be an under power issue?

Also, I have hard drive temperatures, but I'm fairly sure they are not accurate. My SSD is always 128 degrees celsius (computer hasn't melted yet) and the other HD is usually around 38 degrees, which is lower than the ambient temperature.

Any help would be great. I've made extensive use of the search function, but have been unsuccessful.

Thanks!

I did some experimenting with the fans today and I found that switching the push pull configuration around the radiator to blow into the case cooled everything off a good deal. I'm still warmer than the under 70 degree temperatures I thought I was supposed to expect, but it's under 80 at full load and that makes me happy. The top fan is still blowing out of the case. I hope that helps if anyone else is wondering the same thing.

I switched the power plugs for the 6870, using two pci-e ones instead of one of those and an adapter that came with the card. It worked well when I first changed everything, but then I moved the computer back into my room and I had the graphics card shut off once more on me during some heavy processing.

I apologize if this is a newbie question, but I'm kind of at a loss for how to fix this. I've been searching for things like "graphics card shuts down" on both google and the internal search for this website. The only thing that has come up is overheating, but I can't really grasp why this card with three fans should overheat in my set up. Something tells me I'm doing something wrong. is there any way I can monitor the temperatures on this card?

Thanks!
