Mac OS X

If you have a hard drive over 8 GB in size, you must partition it. The partition containing OS X must be within the first 8 GB of space or you will not be able to run OS X. (If you are creating the partion within OS X, it must be 7.45 GB or smaller as reported by Disk Utility, because sometimes a GB is billion bytes and sometimes it's 1,073,741,824 bytes.)

You can only boot OS X from a "master" drive in the beige G3. This applies to hard drives and CD-ROM drives. If the CD-ROM is set to slave, you will not be able to install OS X. If the hard drive is set to slave, you will not be able to boot from it.

Non-Apple upgrades and peripherals (such as unsupported USB devices, replacement drives, and third-party memory) may cause problems when installing or booting into Mac OS X.

Be sure to read and follow Apple's "Read Before You Install" instructions to increase the likelihood of getting OS X installed and running on the first try.

The beige G3 is not officially supported under OS X 10.3 (Panther), but it does work with 10.2.8 and earlier. Panther can be installed using XPostFacto 3, although built-in video is not currently supported.

ok i already have 10.2.8 on it bwhsh8r i was wondering if it would run tiger if i would run xpostfacto 4? also it may not matter but i overclocked the g3 to 333mhz i tried higher but it stopped donging and the light on the power button doesn't come on and the monitor doesn't sync. So you're saying the the built-in video doesn't work on panther or tiger?

it will work fine with tiger using Xpostfacto 4, i have installed it on a few biege G3's myself with no trouble. Im posting this frim my upgraded and overclocked Biege. The only thing to worry about is the onboard video, Rev A biege G3's have ATI Mach64 (mine is a REV A) and there are no drivers at all for this chip but it still works, REV B has ATI Rage Pro and this may be supported if youselect the use patchedragepro option in xpostfacto.

I expect Yours will be a RevB as it has a 300mhz cpu, you should be able to Push the CPU a little more if you remove the black bad from the bottom of the heatsink, use thermal paste and fit a fan to it. i have had 300mhz CPUs up too 400hmz before although some wont overclock a all but its always worth a try.

yes, i think so... and let us know how the system is! looks good, :pirate2: im not sure about the fan but any g3 fan probobly would work... hmm... ill do some more research and get back to you asap :)

max

I dont know if the built in video will be accelerated in tiger but you should get a display, ill check around and get back to you.

there should be a small black pad on the bottom of the heatsink (its softer than the heatsink and help to make better contact) if its not there then there is no need to worry, just clean it up and use some good thermal paste. Any fan with a 4 pin molex connector should work if u can fix it in the case pointed at the cpu. if its a desktop case there wont be much room so you could try a pci exhaust fan with the metal bracket removed, stick it to the bottom of the case (or on top of the hard drive) with the rear pointed at the cpu (this is what i did before i moved it to a customised ATX case).

with my original cpu, a 233mhz G3. i could get it to 266hmz with everything left standard, removed the thermal pad, used arctic silver 5 and fitted the fan i got it to 333hmz. so it can help.

if you dont mind spending a bit of money on it you should try and get a Rage128 video card or a radeon7000 on ebay, it will make a big difference (radeon7000 can do QE :P ).

you need to run xpostfacto from OS9 with the tiger cd in the drive (may work from 10.2.8 too, dunno) then select install from CD. it will then reboot and start the standard installer. once its installed you need to boot back into os9 and run xpostfacto again, this time select the use patchedragepro option and choose to start from the OSX partition, it should then copy all the files it need and reboot again and it should boot tiger.

if you get no display when it reboots you need to select the input and output devices from the left pane in xpostfacto options, input should be keyboard, output should be ATI somthing (dunno the name fir the rage pro)

for overclocking you should use powerlogix cpudirector so you can change the speed of the cache, this can allow you to run the cpu at a higher speed but slow the cache down incase it wont run at that speed.

im off to check on the rage pro situation in tiger. let you know soon.

Just had a poke around some sites and seems you should have no trouble with the onboard video.

also, forgot to mention, if using powerlogix cpu director dont update past 10.4.6, 10.4.7 is not supported yet.

you may also have to reset the PRAM a few times if it refuses to boot. 3 chimes should do.

Good Luck!

:P

My main internet rig is a Beige running Tiger. I'm actually quite impressed with the performance of it...pretty snappy for a 9 year old machine. Quartz Extreme enabling really improves alot!

It's basically got the following:

1 Ghz G3 Powerlogix w/ 1Mb L2 OC'ed to 1.17 Ghz

83 Mhz bus

768 Ram

Radeon 7000

PCI Extreme software to enable QE

10.4.7 and os 9.2.2

120 GB and 80 GB IDE drives

DVD rom and CDRW drives

external firewire drive

USB 2 and firewire pci cards

USB bluetooth

Currently residing in an ATX case

It was my first real experience with a mac at home when i got it a few years back, and i've loved every minute of it since. So if you've got any questions, please feel free to ask :D
