Hi. I am a swedish musician/music-teacher and new here and I have tried on and off for over a year to install OSX on my Hp Pavilion Dv6-1101so. iATKOS 3 v.2 and iDeneb 1.4 were able to install but gave kernel panic on first boot. I think I have tried every possible combination on these "distros" but the same result.

Insyde H2O BIOS is the big problem right?

I own a Mac mini (mid 2010) with Lion installed. I also have an older Compaq P4 3ghz.

I have some Linux experience but DOS not so much.

Is it possible to install Snow Leopard or Lion on this Hp Laptop without breaking it or breaking Windows (Windows 7 is unfortunately inevitable for work). I have read through the forum for days and I am amazed over the knowledge many of you guys have!!

I found an update for my BIOS maybe it is possible to mod?

I hope someone reads this.

Hi and thanks for answering!

From what I could see it was LOCAL APIC ERROR that caused the panic. I don´t know what to do with that because BIOS advanced is locked. I have used the common switches and iDeneb 1.4 and iATKOS v3 are the only ones that would boot and install. After install on first boot I get kernelpanic with all the switches. I have been reading about bios modding but it seems to be almost too dangerous. All hardware in my laptop are supported, it is just the big bios problem but I will not give up yet.

Very strange cpus=1 does not fix the problem...try using another kernel instead of the mach_kernel. For example taptun kernel should fix the local apic problem if you're running snow leopard. If you're on Lion follow this link for the patched kernel: LINK.

Very thankful for your advice and I will try but I feel I dont have enough knowledge. I don´t know howto make "an outside" kernel boot. I have downloaded some drivers and kexts that could be useful and I will use my mac-mini to "build" or modify the system. The problem is that I don´t know how to modify. Where I should put a "new" kernel or driver in the system. I am reading my eyes out here and I will hopefully pick up useful things on the way. I have a week left on vacation so I hope I know somethings before I go back to work. I really hope I don´t have to modify my bios?

I did not touch my bios and i had the same kernel panic. I solved booting with "cpus=1" but in this way cpu is limited (i have a dual core) so i tried taptun kernel (or you can use a legacy kernel too) and it solved my problem. You should put the new kernel in the root (/) directory and give the file the proper attributes from terminal (sudo chown root:wheel yourkernel; sudo chmod 644 yourkernel). Then when booting use the following string, supposing you copied the taptun kernel (and you named it taptun):

taptun arch=i386 -x -v

p.s. to copy a kernel from your hard disk to another hard disk (already mounted) do the following in terminal (if the kernel is in the Downloads directory):

sudo cp /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Downloads/YOURKERNEL /Volumes/MOUNTEDHD/

sudo chown root:wheel /Volumes/MOUNTEDHD/YOURKERNEL

sudo chmod 644 /Volumes/MOUNTEDHD/YOURKERNEL

The words in capital have to be replaced

Great but how do I do this when I have an unbootable system on my laptop (and Win 7) and the new kernel is on my mac-mini? Could I use usb-stick and Unbuntu live? or is better to install OSX to an external usb-drive? Can I then transfer the new system to the internal drive on the laptop and how do I do that?

I know, many questions. I am still reading by the way.

Well the OSX installation that is on my laptop is on the internal hd so I don´t know. The usb-stick installation I did from a guide here is made on mac-mini and shows up. I followed your advice on how to switch kernel and now it goer further but ends in a reboot-loop. Now I am reading the Mammoth guide. It seems to be the real guide for me with a HP Dv6 core duo laptop with Insyde bios.

I have read some more now and it seems to be partially a bootloader problem but that is far from all. To get OSX on my laptop seems to be a long and difficult process. I will take a day or two to make up my mind if I am going to take "the long journey". Many thanks for input though!
