rippingviper
Hi everyone I'm new here and noticed a few people asking for write ups on how to install with this motherboard. I cannot post in that part of the forum so i'm posting it here. I took liberty to write down each step so here goes! This is what I did to install Mac OS 10.6.4 On my P5Q Pro Turbo DUAL BOOT SPECS CPU: Q9550 @ Stock Speeds MOBO: Asus P5Q Pro Turbo FSB @ 1333 Memory: 4 Gigs Reaper @ 1066mhz Video : EVGA GTX260 HDD: 3x WD 250 gig HDD Sound: Used onboard as no real support for my audigy PS: 800 Watt Pro Quattro Keyb/M G15 gaming keyboard, G5 Mouse Case: Coolermaster Centurion Optic: LG DVD +-RW THINGS YOU'LL NEED: Snow Leopard Retail DVD (Purchased) ##### Make sure you burn it to a CD (Googled to find it) 10.6.4 Combo update (Googled to find it) ##### 3.2.0 (Googled to find DL link) AttansicL1E.kext (Googled to find Kext) Lets Begin To Start boot up to your bios BIOS Step 1: Reset everything to defaults Step 2: Go to Main at the top "Storage Config" Configure SATA as [AHCI] Optional: Went to power tab and put my CPU Fan as [standard] and case fans to [silent] as they get noisy on full bore Step 3: Set your Suspend mode to [s3 only] Step 4: Set Boot Priority to Optical Drive Step 5: Insert ##### CD into Optical Drive and save BIOS settings and reboot Installation Step 6: After ##### CD has booted up, Remove the disk and insert SL 10.6 Retail DVD, Push F5 after CD spins up and is recognized and it will be displayed at the prompt. Select the disk and push ENTER Step 7: SL DVD booted up to installation, Next go to DISK UTILITY , I selected 1 of my 3 HDD and formatted a full drive MAc OS Extended(Journaled) Step 8: Install Snow Leopard, I just did a standard install and didn't modify anything. I know lots of people say DON'T DO THAT. But I did and have had no issues, I think its personal preference, So if you'd like to modify your install do it now. Step 9: After Snow Leopard has installed take out your SL disk and re-insert ##### CD into drive. After booted with CD select your new SL operating system and it SHOULD boot (Did for me 1st time) POST Install Step 10: Enter all your information through the registration process or don't. I have a real Mac as well so I just entered it. Note: Now the onboard sound worked right out of the box here for me, The volume toggle doesn't work as of yet (Still working on that) But I use a logitech 5.1 Dolby system and control it via that anyway. Graphics for my GTX260 also worked out of the box. Step 11: If you want to dual boot go to DUAL BOOT if not continue with these steps. You should see your desktop. I next installed 10.6.4 Combo update. Don't reboot at the end. Step 12: This is a long step so hold on tight With the update window still open. I next ran ##### (Version 3.2.0). At the install I selected ##### Install, Select System Utilities, Now this next part is Drivers and Bootloaders: I selected Realtek ALC8XX, I tried universal and it crackled. (yes I know I said it worked out of the box so technically you don't need to select either. But in case it doesn't for you thats what I selected. Next Disk select JMicron36x. Under graphics Select Enablers NVEnabler. NEXT under Miscellaneous SELECT ElliottForceLegacyRTC, EvOreboot, FakeSMC, FakeSMC Plugins, NullCPUPowerManagement, Bootloader is next. I selected Chameleon 2.0 RC5 prerelease. Customization/Boot Options: Selected 32-Bit Apple Boot Screen. System definitions I selected MacPro 5,1. Next themes, I selected Chameleon RC5 Default. OSx86 Software: Select Kext Helper b7, Kext Utility, MSR tools, ShowAllFiles Now click continue to install after install reboot Step 13: Install AttansicL1E.kext using Kext Helper to install Network Adapter which I found on the forum I googled it. Reboot after Kext is installed you should now have a fully functional network adapter. Step 14: I disabled SLEEP due to the fact i'm having issues waking the machine up. Monitors sleeping is fine but WHOLE computer sleep is still not working properly. You should now have a fully functional (For the most part) 10.6.4 Snow Leopard install without Dual boot. Want dual boot? Read after these notes! Notes: Sleep doesn't work properly , Still working on it. Network Adapter I have had a few small issues once in a blue moon where it won't stay on after quitting Starcraft 2. I just rebooted to resolve problem as disabling the device did not work. Sound seems to work great. Been listening to iTunes for an hour with no crackles. Graphics seem to work great. I play World of Warcraft CATA on ultra settings at 40fps with almost no issues. First run I had water that looked pixelated so I went to settings and changed the water from low to ultra and water went perfect again. Also Reboots do take about 15 seconds at a black screen before it actually reboots so don't get to hasty to push the power button just yet. Dual boot: Step 15: Insert Windows 7 Ultimate DVD into drive and let it boot installer. It sees 3 drives in AHCI. Format another drive other then your SL install (Obviously) to install Windows 7 (Or your operating system of choice but Windows 7 seems to run best for me) After install reboot. Step 16: Go to BIOS and boot devices. select your Snow Leopard drive as the FIRST Hard drive to boot. Insert your ##### CD back into the optical drive. Save settings and reboot. Step 17: Run SL from #####, After SL loads up continue with "Step 11" Step 18: Select your SL drive browse to /Extra and open com.apple.Boot.plist with TextEdit. You want to change your timer so it shows the OS's for more then 0 seconds so go down to Should look like this <key>Timeout</key> <string>1</string> Change it to this <key>Timeout</key> <string>5</string> Save the file. Now your ready to dual boot. Congratulations! This is my first and ONLY install of this with my P5Q Pro Turbo. I tried other Boot dvd's and only got Waiting for root device. So ##### worked for me. This is my first time ever doing this and thanks to InsanelyMac Forums I found vital information in order to write this install writeup so thanks to the forums for my source information. wcr3d
Worked for me! Thank you. I changed a few things around for my needs and had to add a couple kexts, like voodoo for ps/2 keyboard. Also I did the official software update to 10.6.7 without a hitch....very pleased!
cain82
This is a clear and concise write up. with so much conflicting information out there, I am appreciative of the efforts rippingviper has gone to on this one, great work!
dlerch
Ok I am going to give ##### a try. I have essentially the same system as you do. I just have gskill ram and gtx 260 sli instead of one gtx 260. I was using EFI earlier and I could not get the damn thing to work, I kept getting a kernal freakout. Now I have windows 7 ultimate on a ntfs drive. If I set my bios to achi, obviously windows 7 will not boot. Do I just need to install some AHCI drivers to my current windows 7 build to get a dual boot? I want to avoid a partition and would rather leave my separate OS's on different drives.

I recently installed with Chameleon-2.0-RC5-r1083.pkg and start perfectly Lion, Snow Leopard and Windows 7 on dedicated disks. The boot of Lion is a bit slow but it works perfectly. dlerch
Looks like I figured out my problem. I got a grat windows 7 driver that now allows me to boot in achi mode. And the SL dvd I was using came with my i7 27 inch imac. Thus it was not the correct build, need a retail disk. Acquiring that now, so hopefully it will go without a hitch! Windows 7=ahci no problem, just set the first and AHCI, after installing Windows. You can not use the DVD in your mac, it only works with your mac. Get Snow Leopard 10.6.3 Retail for examples. dlerch
Yup, I got a copy. Burning it now so hopefully it will work! Ok, SL installed fine but I can't get it to boot with two GPUs. Anyone have a fix?
