Konami®
hello guys, I bought a apple g4 1.5ghz, 60gb HD, 512MB for $549, not bad at all, but the owner sold me the item with only one problem, and I think is a big problem, the backlight does not work, anybody in here know how I can fix this without to pay a lot of money? I know apple have support to fix this but they charge a lot for that, I will appreciate any help, thanks!

Konami®
Backlight? Are we talking about a laptop here? And btw, your siggie misread my machine! Yes, the display backlight does not work. You need a flash light in order to see it, and yes it is a laptop powerbook.
Superhai
Well you can install it yourself, but it is a complicated job. (I haven't done it on a mac but on a pc-laptop it is)
guilliamo
This is a nice machine. Presumably it works fine with an external monitor, so I'd reset PRAM just to be sure that the screen isn't something simple. You MAY just have a dead backlight OR it could be the inverter that drives the flourescent backlight. No way I know of to tell which without replacing one at a time. IF the powerbook with an external monitor, keyboard & mouse meets your needs, I'd seriously consider just using it that way. I'm pretty sure you can't get it fixed "professionally" for less than $500. See <http://www.powerbookresq.com/detail.php?prodID=P010397>. MORE if your screen is 17". You may be able to get a good deal on a replacement inverter and/or screen on eBay if you know exactly what you need AND are patient AND are willing/able to tackle the disassembly on your own. While I'm sure that it is theoretically possible for you to remove the screen and replace just the backlight, that is a complicated procedure that is best done professionally as well. I have not used <http://lcdrepair.net/>, but they seem to be pretty sharp and reasonably priced. I DO have a copy of the Apple service manual that I can email you if you want. guilliamo
Wound up using rapishare to send this large (~11MB) file. Since others may find it useful, link is <http://rapidshare.de/files/28578165/pbg4_15_fw800_15ghz.pdf.html>. G
