markbarks
Hi, I had a working hackintosh for just over a year (built using the method here - snow-leopard-dvd-install-for-g31m-t3672 - graphics card is GeForce 8400 GS). All very happy and low maintenance, until about a week ago when all of a sudden the machine blue-screened without warning. That was the end of the happy days Now I can only get the desktop to appear only in safe mode - without the -x option at startup, as soon as the apple splash screen disappears the blue screen reappears. I've spent a couple of days digging around the log files, starting up in verbose mode, repairing permissions, and rebuilding kext caches. Nothing seems to help, so I was hoping someone might give me a hand. I've attached my system.log and kernel.log below - hopefully this should have verbose output, but there always seems to be more on the screen than in the file (does anyone know why that is? How can you capture everything output to /dev/console?) I'm running these kexts in Extra/Extensions LegacyALC883.kext NullCPUPowerManagement.kext OpenHaltRestart.kext PlatformUUID.kext Sleepenabler.kext fakesmc.kext This is the contents of my com.bios.Boot.plist <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>Kernel</key> <string>mach_kernel</string> <key>Timeout</key> <string>5</string> <key>Kernel Flags</key> <string>arch=i386</string> <key>EthernetBuiltIn</key> <string>y</string> <key>GraphicsEnabler</key> <string>y</string> <key>Theme</key> <string>bootcamp</string> <key>Graphics Mode</key> <string>1280x1024x32</string> </dict> </plist> If there's anything else that would help with the diagnosis, please let me know and I'll get the details straight away. system.log Nov 14 19:28:16 unknown-00-17-3f-d0-6b-c6 com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[72] ([0x0-0x1e01e].com.apple.Terminal[227]): Exited: Killed Nov 14 19:28:16 unknown-00-17-3f-d0-6b-c6 login[229]: DEAD_PROCESS: 229 ttys000 Nov 14 19:28:17 unknown-00-17-3f-d0-6b-c6 loginwindow[30]: DEAD_PROCESS: 30 console Nov 14 19:28:17 unknown-00-17-3f-d0-6b-c6 com.apple.kextd[9]: Cache file /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kext.caches/Directories//System/Library/Extensions/KextIdentifiers.plist.gz is out of date; not using. Giorgio_multi
Use the DVI output of the graphic card with a DVI-VGA adapter to VGA input of the monitor.
markbarks
Thanks for the reply Giorgio - that looks to have done the trick Just wondering, do you have any idea what might have caused the vga to stop working after a year? Cheers
dothacker
did you install something, like updates?
markbarks
Erm.. I don't think so - I switched off all updates and am quite careful about that sort of thing. The only change that I can think of in the system's environment is that it happened on the night BST changed to GMT. Seems unlikely I know, but I'm clutching at straws and as a developer I've seen this kind of thing screw many an application!
Hank61
The problem seems to be changes in user preferences; the system itself is working, but gfx card output is missing. Have the same problem whilesetting up a new system. If you log in as guest (or a new user account) it works, but without full resolution.
