^GoJo^
Hey, I just tried to install snow on an old Maxtor DiamondMax from 2005. It doesn't even show the booloader, tried both MBR & GPT. Of course i did everything correctly. Incompatibility?
3.14r2
There is a chance that you should zero-fill the drive to "clean" it from all the stuff that is been there for a long time. It helped me once in a similar situation.
^GoJo^
I see... So you don't think it could be incompaibility?
3.14r2
I see... So you don't think it could be incompaibility? No, I don't. There could be incompatible disk controllers, but disks? I really don't think so. I have used a Samsung IDE drive ageing 7 years now, with no problems at all...
Gringo Vermelho
Yes there's no way it could be the disk itself, unless it's broken of course. If you don't see the disk in Disk Utility it means that there are no drivers loaded for the drive controller on your motherboard. If you need further details please provide details.. sinfolmatt
similar to the hdd, would all dvd burners be compatible? I am about to buy the components to attempt a build and the one thing I have not been able to pick, see much on is DVD drives. Would any do? are there some that are known to work well? Both works (with a proper driver). IMHO
sinfolmatt
What is the disk controller? Would the disk controller be on the mobo? I am planning on building on this board: GIGABYTE GA-G41M-ES2L LGA 775 Intel G41 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard because it seems to work well with SL. Gringo Vermelho
similar to the hdd, would all dvd burners be compatible? In the sense that is discussed in this thread, yes, any working drive would be capable of at least booting and installing OS X. However, I've seen posts from people who are unable to burn discs on OS X but I don't think it was ever established if it was a problem with the drive itself or a software problem. Some optical drives prevent auto-S3 sleep from working. Sometimes this can be fixed by adding code to the DSDT at the SATA port where the drive is connected. Some drives need to have a disc inside at all times or they keep making weird noises, sometimes this can be fixed by disabling auto sleep for hard drives in energy saver preferences. In conclusion it seems the firmware of standard PC drives lack certain ACPI features that OS X expects. Unfortunately I don't remember any model names or anything, you'll have to search for this here on IM yourself to find more information.
