iGirl
System: ============= Gigabyte P55A-UD4P Rev. 1.0 (F8 Bios) Intel Core i5 Quad-Core 2.66 GHz CPU 2x - 2 GB Crucial DDR3 1066MHz Memory 2x - 1 TB Wester Digital Caviar Blue 7200 rpm SATA drives 1x - Sony Dual-Layer DVD Burner (IDE)* 1x - Floppy Drive* 1x - Sony Optiarc Dual-Layer/Lightscribe DVD Burner (SATA) 1x - EVGA Nvidia GeForce 9500GT 1 GB DDR2 graphics card Linksys WMP54GS Wireless-G wi-fi card UltraX4 modular 600W PSU Linkworld case that looks like sorta like a Mac Pro (but in black) Windows 7 Pro installed on first drive Mac OS X Snow Leopard on second drive * SL can't see either of these. This is a brand new system I just built expressly to Hackintosh and dual boot with Win 7. Total cost was $1,032 btw. INSTALL: ============ ##### Supported + Retail Snow Leopard DVD (a green sticker on the box says 10.6.3) Installation went flawlessly! POST-INSTALL ============ Despite issues people have had with some things not working after an update from 10.6.2 --> 10.6.3 I'm pleased to say all my hardware that can be recognized worked out of the box (most notably, PS/2 keyboard, USB ports, Networking (both onboard LAN), Wi-Fi card, and audio. I'd have been happy to stop right there if Apple hadn't gone and released another point update. In fact, if you want a functional system with almost no extra work to do, and don't mind being a version behind, I'd strongly recommend installing from the 10.6.3 Retail DVD, run ##### and stop right there. (of course that statement only applies to anyone running the same hardware) Backed up my entire 10.6.3 Extensions folder So, I downloaded the 10.6.4 combo update and ran it. Did NOT restart as instructed, but ran ##### Installed: * ##### * System Utilities Rebooted PROBLEMS ========== Lost audio Lost all network connections Lost advanced graphics settings (stuck at 1024x768, 2nd monitor not detected). Also, my PS/2 keyboard was dead and my USB mouse was freaking out (it would only let me select the first item on drop-down lists and the first folder in a Finder window). I unplugged the keyboard and plugged it back in, but it didn't work until I found (by trial and error) that turning the "Caps Lock" on and off reset both the keyboard and the mouse so I could use them. FIXES ========== Decided to install the "official" VoodooPS2Controller.kext in place of the one bundled in #####, as I believe somewhere in the forums I read that it didn't have the official version. Rebooted Keyboard and mouse still freak out, but it will reset by pressing the "Caps Lock" (keyboard no longer had to be unplugged and plugged back in to be able to hit the key). I should also mention that this "keyboard freakout" happens even if there isn't a keyboard plugged in, but the only way I can stop it is to plug a PS/2 keyboard in and hit the Caps Lock key. Next I tried replacing the VoodooPS2Controller.kext with AppleACPIPS2Nub.kext ApplePS2Controller.kext Same results as before with keyboard freak-out, but it stops as soon as I tap the "Caps Lock" key. The only difference I noticed between the Apple and Voodoo PS/2 kexts is that the keyboard loses power with the Voodoo ones when you put the computer to sleep - but it doesn't matter since it won't wake up. Tried re-installing the AppleHDA.kext from 10.6.3 - even though I was reasonably certain there were dependencies that wouldn't be met and it probably wouldn't work with 10.6.4, even though it had worked flawlessly after initial install of 10.6.3. Also tried to restore the functional network kexts from 10.6.3. On reboot neither of those worked, of course, but I had to give it a shot just in case it did. Opened up ##### again, this time I installed: * System Utilities * Audio --> LegacyHDA --> ALC889 * Audio --> HDAEnabler --> ALC889 * Audio --> AppleHDA 10.6.2 Rollback * Graphics --> Enablers --> NVEnabler * Network --> Realtek Gigabit Ethernet --> Realtek R1000SL * smbios.plist --> Mac Pro --> Core i5 * OSx86 Software (none of them actually installed, however) Got my audio back (with fewer options available, but at least it's sound) Got my network back Got my multiple monitor graphics card setting back Keyboard works normally once I turn the "Caps Lock" key on and off. This set-up doesn't use a custom DSTD. There doesn't appear to be a DSTD in the database for my motherboard running F8 and I'm extremely nervous about flashing the BIOS when I've got a working system. As I mentioned above, the only problem remaining is that it won't wake up from sleep. Maybe a USB keyboard will fix that? Doesn't matter much to me though, I never put my computers to sleep anyway - they're either "on" or "off." So there it is, my slightly less-than-vanilla but fully functional Snow Leopard 10.6.4 install.
Gringo Vermelho
Thanks for sharing your experience. To get rid of the freak-outs, don't mix USB and PS2 input devices. Use one or the other - preferably USB since Macs don't have PS2 ports.

So there it is, my slightly less-than-vanilla but fully functional Snow Leopard 10.6.4 install. I would recommend you going ahead and flashing to the latest Bios. You're definitely not going to be 'losing' anything. Use the Qflash that's built into your system instead of a third party one. Also just remember after flash is successful load optimized defaults, get to the chameleon screen(if you don't get to it don't freak out), reboot change your bios to what it was before the flash. And then just reinstall ##### with the DSDT method. Just remember, back up before you do anything. Use Carbon copy cloner. I just built my rig today with a Gigabyte P55A-UD3. scotttremper
Awesome! Finally got my sound working! But now another issue...I am using a PNY geforce 9800 gt 1gb ddr3 graphics cards with dual dvi ports on it. For some reason after I run ##### it will freeze if I use two monitors. I have one going dvi to dvi, and the second going dvi to dvi to hdmi adapter to hdmi into the monitor. It tends to freeze or not boot up when the hdmi one is plugged in. Any suggestions? Mind you, I don't have Internet hooked up yet, so do I need to update the graphics card or something along those lines? Thanks again for any help... Nevermind. For some reason my HDMI input locked it up. Switched to only a dvi to dvi, and a dvi to VGA. Works great now!
iGirl
UPDATE: 10.6.8 I updated my system to 10.6.5 and then 10.6.6 and ran it that way for quite a while without any problems. I was avoiding the update to 10.6.7 due to posts online about it messing up peoples' systems. Well, I took the plunge into 10.6.8 territory today - last of the great Snow Leopard! I have zero interest in Lion, at least not until it is at about 10.7.5, but this update to 10.6.8 is apparently a prerequisite to eventually upgrade to Lion anyway. Used the Combo Update and tonymac86's ##### - but this update did NOT go smoothly. First of all my system blue screened and crashed at the end of the Combo Update - so I never had a chance to run #####. First reboot failed to get past the gray Apple logo screen. Second attempt resulted in a boot loop. Booted into Windows, downloaded the current ##### iso (version 3.x) and used that to boot my system. As soon as I moved the mouse it did a kernel panic and I had to hit the reset button. Next reboot was a little better, I was actually able to run ##### and restore my audio, usb, and install the newer version of Chameleon so I didn't need to bootstrap with the ##### disc anymore. Graphics were stuck in low res - it couldn't detect my card. Had to apply the PCI fix too. Still in low res, but could id the card now. Can't find 10.6.8 drivers for the 9500GT though! Applied the 10.6.8 "Fermi" drivers even though it's not a Fermi card there was a GT 120 in the list of cards and I'm pretty sure I recall someone telling me that's the OEM model number for the 9500GT. If I boot with the -v (verbose) flag the NVenabler detects the card correctly, but it says "probe failed" and it goes through detection and failed probing about three times before the system continues to boot normally. Now back up and running at full resolution with QE/CI again, even though these aren't the correct drivers, technically?! Does anybody know if there are actual drivers for my 9500GT card under 10.6.8? I sure couldn't find any.
