I've got a Mac Pro sitting in front of me, and as the specs say, it's not terrible.

3Ghz Quad Core (two dual cores)

2GB RAM (FB-DIMM)

250GB drive

ATI X1900

The problem is, when you push the power button, it turns on, it chimes, but never has display.

It's down to being either the GPU or the Logic Board.

I don't really have a way to test another graphics card, so I'm wondering if there's a way to definitely say it's one or the other.

On the ATI card, there are two LEDs that do light up when the machine powers on, just like there are lights on the memory risers. I noticed a strip of LEDs on the logic board, however I can't really see them to see if they all light up or anything. I tried the SMC and RTC reset buttons behind the memory risers, and it's still giving me the problem.

As far as I'm aware, this problem started happening after the owner tried putting an Airport card inside, and dropped BOTH screws in the case. I'm wondering if they tried using it, and a screw caused a short, killing something on the logic board, but since I had to flip the computer around and shake it several times before I could manage to locate the screws and then actually install the airport card.

I called the owner and when they heard what I said, they strongly denied everything, telling me the logic board was definitely fine.

You can hear the hard drive seeking as it's starting, and the graphics card appears to be functioning properly, the fan on it does spin up and slow down to keep it cool.

I'm going to try and locate a Mac Pro graphics card to test in it, however can anyone shed any more light on this issue?

Update:

Upon looking closer, there is the Diagnostic LEDs on the motherboard.

Here is what happens when I hold it down:

EFI: Lights up

PWR On: Lights up

GPU Present: Lights up

CPU A/B Overtemp: Off

CPU Fail A/B: Off

Trickle: On

Sleep: [no LED present]

So the Mac recognizes that there's a GPU, and there's no other problem. I need to source a different graphics card to check?
