So I have been getting very frustrated that I am unable to currently run dual screens in anything but mirror mode. My monitors are nearing their end of life and I am considering buying just a single wide screen.

Has anyone ever heard of any way to take that one single wide-screen and splitting it in half, then have OS X treat it as if it was actually two displays?

Dual screens work fine here, mirrored or separate. There's a problem with your injection method, or there's a compatibility issue with your video card and OSX's ATI drivers. Try something else, like Netkas' ATY_Init.kext for example.

That's just....why on earth would you want to do that?

What's the advantage?

Beerkexed,

To the best of my knowledge no one has succesfully gotten a 4650 to work in proper dual screen mode, and I know a LOT of methods have been tried. If you have some specific knowledge om the 4650.

I would like to point out though that saying "Hey you're card can probably do dual screen on its own" is not really answering the question of splitting a single large screen.

So please if anyone has heard of an app that does accomplish splitting a single wide screen monitor into 2 independent displays, please speak up.

Oh and the advantage for me would be the fact that I need to get some new displays anyway and if I could circumvent using two video ports then I could get a really nice wide screen to use for movies that I could split into two separate work spaces for when I am actually using the computer as more then a DVD player.

There's a few programs for Windows that can do this but in OSX I have yet to find anything. The closest I could come is with Cinch, drag a window to the left and it resizes to take up the left half of the screen, drag another to the right and it resizes to fit that side. When you close windows from these positions then they reopen to the same place,ie:downloads always opens on my right half, documents always on the left, quicktime on the right etc. Then if you need to see something full size just drag it to the top, dragging it off the top puts it back to its original place.I like this program for streamlining my workflow so much I put it on all 4 of my Macs(2 hacks 2 real). Not exactly what your looking for but still a very cool app especially on a widescreen once you have all your folders and apps to open on the side you want and Expose programed to activate with a mouse button.

Thanks GSW, that sounds very much like something that might work. Going to do a quick search and read up on it. Thanks for the assist.

EDIT: Actually that looks EXACTLY like what I need, but that price tag, a whole $7?! I don't know if I can afford that :-P

Thanks again!
