Bloo
im a proud owner of a Mac Mini with an Intel Core Solo processor. i have XP SP2 installed on my Mini and use that as my main system. i dont really like having to boot from one OS to the other back and forth. cause i need XP for the most part, but i like using OS X for a couple of hours every once in awhile to try to learn how to use it. i heard about OSX86 and am wanting to install OS X on my old DELL Dimension PC. so this way i can have OS X on the PC and have XP on the Mini. since the Mini is more modern and faster for everyday use. and the PC is just kind of there collecting dust. so i hope i can accomplish this task. i am downloading Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.6.X86-HOTISO , which seems like itll take me a full day to finish. i just want to know what i need other than this to install OSX on my PC. i assume all i do is burn this ISO to a DVD and just run it and go thru a normal installation procedure. the specs for my computer are: 1.5Ghz Pentium 4 Processor (i used CPUZ to check and it is SSE2) 640MB of RAM 20GB harddrive (Windows XP) 20GB harddrive (blank) 16MB video card (never really needed anything more for the stuff i do) DVD burner drive CD Burner drive am i able to run OSX with those specs? i dont really plan on doing anything intensive with this, other than figuring out how applications work and the many features of OSX. i dont plan on connecting to the internet with this computer. cause its really just a way of putting use to this old computer and learning an operating system without affecting my daily use of my Mac Mini. i had previously tried the instructions from here http://osxonpc.com/ but all i get is a black screen and nothing boots. even when using the Ultimate Boot CD. all i get is a black screen. and the harddrive light is always on but nothing seems to happen. any help would be greatly appreciated. Bloo
Read through and follow this guide: http://www.profit42.com/index.php/2006/06/...ndows-computer/ ive seen that guide before. but im not wanting to partition anything. i want OS X on its own primary harddrive. which is why i have a blank 20GB harddrive. check the wiki It's very helpful. And you should run OSX on your mini...it was designed to run it i read the specs from one of the Dell Dimension computers on that page. and it seems that everything should work fine on my PC. i know i everyone tells me that OSX is what i should use on my Mini and stay away from Windows XP. but i like XP, never had a problem with it in the many years ive used it. and im just not one to adjust quickly in making a switch. the reason why i got a Mac Mini in the first place was to get a faster and more efficient computer that can run Windows XP. and thats what it does. and it runs great. kernalzero
http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.ph...s#10.4.7_Guides follow one of those guides on dual booting is my suggestion. I would also get ahold of one of the JaS 10.4.6 install DVD's from one of the usual torrent sites (can't post links remember). Install that natively if you can following one of those guides and let us know how it works out. about xp on your mini, that's a personal choice and I won't hijack this thread to debate that choice. If it works for you it's none of my business. Goodluck! Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/21648-new-user/#findComment-142991 Share on other sites
Bloo
ok ive installed OS X on my PC. and it seems to be running smoothly. only thing i saw that studders a bit is when accessing Dashboard. but everything else loads up pretty fast compared to what i was expecting, since my PC isnt exactly up to todays standards. i have a question about Rosetta. since i have an SSE2 chip. does that mean i cant run PowerPC apps? or has this been fixed already? cause ive been reading thru old topics on this site, but it just leaves me a little confused with what people say. also when the desktop appears i get the error messages of AppleAC97Audio.kext was installed improperly and another error about AudioIntelICH.kext dunno what thats about since i havent exactly bothered with anything else other than to make sure the system boots up properly. and it does. http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.ph...s#10.4.7_Guides follow one of those guides on dual booting is my suggestion. If it works for you it's none of my business. Goodluck! i dont see how a debate can come from which OS i prefer to use. i just cant automatically switch from one OS to the other. i have to experiment with it and learn how to use an operating system and feel comfortable and confident with it. i know XP inside and out, so naturally that will be my OS of choice to use. cause i know people will go on and on about how OS X is better than XP. and yeah it might look more modernized and have easier functionality, but if im not comfortable with it from the get go, then i dont see it as being 'better'. cause theres a group of people that will say the same thing about Linux being far superior than any operating system on the market . but what good will that do me, if i am not familiarized with it. for me this is more of a chance to put my old PC to use, since it was replaced with my new Mac Mini. jrrjrr
If you installed a decently patched version of OS X like a Jas or a Myzar, you should have no problems running PPC apps under Rosetta with an SSE2 CPU. On the kext errors, it usually means that you need to repair permissions. You do this with the Disk Utility. Open it, select the drive, and there will be a "Repair Permissions" button near the bottom. It will take 2 or 3 minutes. Then reboot and see if the errors are gone.
