Snerler
What is the best way to install Snow Leopard on an AMD system? My computer runs Leopard well but I'd like to give snow leopard a try. Is it best to use a retail disk or a distribution like the "Hazard" one? ratvn
Hi there, I have heard people success in either way. I used retail method for my AMD and am happy with it. ratvn
What exactly do you do to install? Do you have a guide that works well for you? The guide are just a few threads from this one. That is a great guide for retail DVD on AMD by HardKnox and it only took me 30 min. My SL runs so well, with just only several additional kexts to the vanilla, and of course the kernel. The guide required an existing OSX on the target pc, and since you already have it, should give it a try. _Jay_
What exactly do you do to install? Do you have a guide that works well for you? What are your specs? Hazard's distro doesn't like all AMD setups. I still can't get Hazard's distro to boot my PC at all. Just reboots infinitely. However it is definitely a lot easier for AMD users to install Snow Leopard via an existing OSX drive. Only issues with that is, you won't know if SL works until you reboot. Also if you have one hard drive, get ready to lose Leopard once SL is working, unless you have two separate hard drives to install each onto. PM if you can't find a working distro, I will try my best to help you. My setup is: MSI K9AG Neo2-Digital AM2 AMD 690G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Windsor 3.0GHz Socket AM2 125W Dual-Core 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM (PC2 6400) Western Digital Caviar Blue WD3200AAKS 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s I've tried different combinations and nothing has worked so far. It'd be hard to tell you exactly what I'm trying, as it's all a blur. With Chamaleon bootloader and whoever made kernel v0.9 and v1.1 recently, the furthest I've gotten is a kernel panic with the message "Should have 1 Threads, but only found 2 for Die 1." Luke31
Hey everyone. This is my first post on the InsanelyMac Forums. I'm sorry to use this thread to my advantage, but for some reason I lack permission to commence a new thread. Nevertheless, my problem goes with the title of this thread. First, I'm sort of a newb when it comes to this sort of endeavor. That said, I'm attempting to install my extra copy of Snow Leopard on my PC. I used the MyHack Installer, along with the chocolate kernel, to install Snow Leopard via my 8 gigabyte USB Flash drive. Now, I used the chocolate kernel because I am running an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Processor. I have an MSI K9MM-V (VIA K8m800+8237R Plus Chipset Based) motherboard, an ATI Radeon X1650 Pro AGP GPU, 2 gigs of ddr2 RAM, and a 750 Gig Western Digital Hard Drive. As aforementioned, I burned the OS X disk image onto my flash drive via Disk Utility on my Macbook Pro (formatted Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)). Then, I installed the files from MyHack Installer onto the same flashdrive, along with the chocolate kernel. In BIOS, I selected the flash drive to be the primary boot device. All works well, and I eventually reach the Snow Leopard Install screen. Here is where my problem arises. When I must choose what location to install OS X to, ONLY my flashdrive appears as an option. I want to install it onto my 750 Gig hard drive (which currently has Ubuntu 10.04 installed on it). The only option, however, is the flash drive. Can anyone please help me? I would greatly appreciate it, and sorry for sounding newbish as I'm completely new to this. I will further clarify/specify if need be. THANKS! BTW: I do not have OS X preinstalled on the target PC... Looking to install it from my flashdrive. Check in your BIOS to see if you have options of SATA to AHCI. Your problem should not be too hard to resolve, at least OSX installer could see your USB flash, which mean that the SATA/USB controller is not totally unrecognized. darthkir
Firstly I would like to say that I am yet to own a Mac but planning to get one next week a Macbook Pro. I also plan to build a Hackintosh using my AMD pc (Phenom II X2 with Asus Ati Mobo). I appreciate some insights on how to do this. I have been told that I can use original SL dvd to do this with some modification of course, so this is the route that I want to take. If you guys may, please advise me on how to use orginal SL to setup, where I can get the appropriate files/driver/kexts/whatever to accomplish this (pls pardon my still incomplete understanding of terms related to Mac like kexts and such.) Just to inform that my rig is based on AMD Phenom II X2 on AM3 Asus Mobo on Ati chipset and Radeon HD4850, SB Audigy 2ZS soundcard. Although I am zero with Mac however I am a technical guy so I am more than willing to experiment provided I can get enough information to proceed with. This is where I need your help in pointing me to the right direction. Thanks in advance. Zythyr
I have a quick question, lets say I manage to get Snow Leopard installed properly with HardKnox 's guide. How do I figure out which drivers I need for my hardware, and where would I find these drivers? Luke31
So I tried a different approach. Instead, I want to install a distro of Leopard on my pc, then use my retail snow leopard disk to upgrade (as there are several tutorials on how to do this). I installed iDeneb's 10.5.5 successfully. Only problem is, when I boot up my computer after the install, and click on the partition with the OS X installed on it, the computer seems to reboot and enter the MSI logo screen that appears when first turning on the computer. Am I doing anything wrong? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/215578-best-way-to-install-snow-leopard-on-amd/#findComment-1475315 Share on other sites

My suggestion would be to look for your motherboard specific installer as it should come with all the necessary files/boot to compliment your SL DVD. zefram69
Hi,It looks like you're missing a few kexts, and AMD should use chocolate kernel. In my post above, there is a name for the guide that you could use. That is what I use to install retail DVD to my AMD 64x2 2.5Ghz, running at 3.25 Ghz. That guide didn't work for me, the test7 kernel isn't recognizing my CPU. Also, the guide was for someone who already had OSX installed... and I don't on that computer (only a MacBook). It did give me the idea of patching my DSDT, which worked! So, now I'm using Chameleon 2rc4 with pcj v1.1 kernel. I get through the installer, format the hard drive, but I can't get it to install. What happens is that the installer copies the pkg files to the hard disk, uncompresses BaseSystem.pkg and then HANGS. I don't know what it's doing. It's not even panicing most of the time, it just never moves on from that. I can then restart and use Terminal to see that the files have been decompressed... but whatever the installer is supposed to do after that never completes. Any ideas? Would it be an idea to force the install on the hard drive and then see if I can get it working after that? Thanks for the help so far, ratvn. zefram69
A bit of an update. I tried some other kernels and tried to see if I could progress. I tried: pcj 0.9 pcj 1.1 chocolate kernel test7 voodoo legacy kernel I'm wishing these all had versions. The 0.9 gave nothing, wouldn't boot. test7 and voodoo had kernel panics. The rest gave me a grey screen when the boot was done. One interesting thing, pcj mach_kernel in 64 bit mode is what I've been using to install. In 32 bit mode it just gave the grey screen with no hope of loading the installer. I did manage to get a couple of panics with the stalled install. One was a page fault, so not that interesting. The other is a fault with pmap_pv_remove with a null pv_list in pmap_internal.h line 666 (ominously). Does this tell anyone anything? zefram69
Yet another update! Finally got it working. I reinstalled with Empire EFI partition on the USB key, but that didn't work too well. I re-reinstalled with PC EFI 10.6, and that worked with the chocolate kernel. I had used a bunch of the kexts from Empire, just to be sure... I'll start a new thread one everything is working 100%. Right now, no sound and only 1024x768 video. Thanks for the advice along the way.
