RpD
Hi... I saw another thread on "Mac OS X and VMware", but I don't have Virtualization Technology in my CPU, so... I saw the reference to Zenith432's topics on Snow Kitty and Leopard, but I searched the forum and the Snow Kitty thread I found had requirements listing VT... didn't read further. I've been searching around the 'net briefly, and apparently Basilisk II will emulate 68000 processors so you can install System 7 or OS 8.x ...similarly for vMac and SoftMac. I found Apple's System 7.5 download. I guess PearPC will emulate PPC for OS X, but... seems all of the above are pretty dead. I didn't dig too deep... things looked out-of-date, abandoned. Maybe my system isn't 'sufficient' to get OS X on it... but at the moment I have XP, Win7 (w/VMware Player - XP & W98), and Ubuntu 9.10... multibooting on my Toshiba M55-S3291 laptop, 1.86GHz, 1.5GB RAM, 100GB hard drive. I only just got the linux set up, and I thought I'd see if I could get an OS X environment so I could tinker/learn that too. Getting crowded, but I have a few GB I can spare, I think . I have a copy of VMware Server too, just not installed. Then there's Boothink... just a boot loader? I was wondering if I could get a virtual, latest OS X set up with VMware - without VT in the cpu. I see that OS X Leopard can be bought for about $200 on Amazon... and was wondering if the recent $30 upgrade can be used. Guess I'll avoid the torrent of versions on the 'net If anybody familiar with all the above can comment and help me pick the best route (or a couple), if any, to try... I'd appreciate the input. Hi, You definately can run either Leopard or Snow Leopard without VT-x, performance will not be great but it will work, and probably the easiest way to achieve this is using Virtualisation and specifically VMware Workstation 7 or the free Player 3, Server is OK for Leopard but will not work for Snow Leopard, and in truth Player 3 or Workstation 7 are much easier and better too use, and are at least two generations later in terms of technology. So you were on the right lines, Zenith432's excellent snow kitty topic has the instructions and plenty of other help is in that topic, link below: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1288448 Also just so you know nick8462 is now running OS X and his PC definately does not support VT-x, link below: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1384274 I would spend the $30 on the SL upgrade from Apple, and do not be tempted with the torrents, the "retail" version as we call it will do a full fresh install under VM or on an iMac or other Apple hardware for that matter. If you read Zenith432's snow kitty topic or Donk's equally excellent topic link below: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...t&p=1186508 The term "Retail" is banded about all the time, and should make your VM install run smoothly. Good luck, post any problems in Zenith432's Snow Kitty topic, as that is the guide you should follow, and although Zenith432's guide talks about VT-x, OS X will install without, honest, and we will all try and help you join the growing ranks of OS X under VM converts. RpD
Ok... thanks for the info on VT not being necessary... for the (Snow)Leopard VM's. I'm going to have to study the manual and find the 'package' that Donk mentions... I'm a little confused right now. Maybe Donk's post/manual will clear it up... Zenith432's thread is about already having a Leopard VM to make a SL VM. [Ok... Donk's thread is for Leopard from scratch, and the 'package' is vmware-darwin-200 ...with a fix for Core 2 Quad and Core i7 (vmware-darwin-voodoo), and a darwin mod for installing Snow Leopard on Wkstn 7 beta (darwin-wks7)... being the first three links at top of thread. Zenith432's thread is for creating a Snow Leopard VM from a Leopard VM. So... I'll have to start with a Leopard 10.5 DVD or iso.] Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/208654-best-way-to-get-os-x-on-a-pc-virtual-or-emulation-or/#findComment-1393754 Share on other sites
