Success with Gigabyte G31M-E2SL and 10.5.6 retail install

First off I would like to thank all contributors to this forum for their amazing work. Thank you guys!

 

So I guess this is my turn to share my own experience with a small system I just built. This was my first OSx86 machine, and even my first PC build.

 

I performed a 10.5.6 retail install using the Voyn1x tutorial from Infinitymac and the following tools linked at the bottom of their page:

I first collected my tools and the Chameleon package to an USB key, then I burned an ISO CD of the Boot132 image using OSX DiskUtility.

 

After modifying the CMOS setup of my board, I successfully booted the Boot132 CD to the point where I was prompted with 'boot:'

 

I then switched the CD to the Leopard 10.5.6 retail DVD, and hit enter.

 

This took me to the first OSX installer window, the language selection.

 

After choosing my options, and passing the license agreement, I launched the DiskUtility from the menu before going further, my HD being still unformatted at this stage.

I chose a 1 partition, GUID table format for my disk.

 

Back to the OSX installer, I customized the install, dismissing Printer Drivers, Language translations, Additional Fonts and x11.

After a very short time (about 8-10 minutes), OSX installer was ready to restart.

 

So keeping the Boot132 CD in the CDROM drive, I rebooted the machine.

At the 'boot:' prompt I typed '80' so the PC will continue the boot process on the Hard Disk.

I came straight to the OSX Desktop without a glitch..Cool!

 

I then inserted my USB key and installed the Chameleon bootloader onto my HD, just following the tutorial's instructions (checked 'Chameleon EFI HFS', unchecked 'Extras' and 'Options). I used the 2.0-RC4-r684 version.

 

Still following the tutorial, I mounted the EFI partition on the desktop, using the 'EFI Partition Mounter' script provided.

I then copied the 'Extra' folder (also provided as 'Extra-G31M-ES2L.zip') on the mounted EFI partition, just using the Finder.

 

I removed the Boot132 CD from the drive, I was ready to try a first boot on my first OSx86 machine, and even my first custom built PC.

 

So I rebooted, entered the BIOS settings to boot straight on the Hard Disk, saved and exited.

After the usual PC screens, the Chameleon screen appeared, then the hacked grey Apple screen, and in barely 30 seconds in total I was sitting in front of the OSX Desktop..great!

 

After a quick check, it appeared that a few things were not working.

-the Audio

-the on-board Ehernet card.

-the Sleep function

 

Now on for the tweaking...:

 

Ethernet card : I launched OSx86Tools/View PCI device, where my on-board Ethernet device was marked as 'Attansic Technology Corp. Unknown Device'

After a little browsing on insanelynac.com, it appeared that the v 2.0 revision of my Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L mobo was including such a device, which is unsupported by OSX..so no luck from this side.

The Gigabyte website states that the LAN chip is a Atheros AR8131 which is just a rebranding of the Attansic chip.

Audio: Under the 'About this Mac/Audio' menu, I can read 888, so I assume the codec is ALC888.

Nevertheless, I manage to get almost full audio using VoodooHDA.kext from this package : http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=141049, even if it is said to be designed for the ALC662. The only thing missing is 'SPDIF In' in the sound control panel.

I couldn't test SPDIF Out, but both Line Input and Output work just fine.

I had to put the kext in the System/Library/Extensions, as it wouldn't load from the EFI/Extra. So its not 100% Vanilla anymore I guess.

 

Sleep: I haven't found a fix yet. Manually putting to sleep just make the mouse pointer disappear, with the nasty 'Device removal' alert at 'wake'. Anybody got any idea?
