Need a little help from some old hands as I'm using old hardware.

Objective:

Vanilla 10.6 (SL) install on Gateway GM5642E

Complete:

GUID partition of hard drive

Install from working OSX install to drive using OSXInstall.mpkg from DVD

Manual install Chameleon RC4 to EFI partition

/EFI/Extra/Extensions: fakesmc.kext, OSXRestart.kext

Issue:

Getting kernel panic in IOATAFamily.kext on boot. As I recall this is associated with SATA drives not configured for AHCI in the BIOS. Have upgraded BIOS to Award 1.12; latest available from Gateway but does not have AHCI option. Same error with -x flag.

Looking for recommendations. Perhaps a legacy kext or injector?

Hardware:

cpu: Intel Pentium dual-core E2140 (1.6GHz, 800MHz fsb)

chipset: Intel 945GC

ram: 2Gb DDR2

drive: 250GB SATA, 500GB SATA (testing in USB dock)

gpu: ATI 4650

I've made a couple of attempts to correct this kernel panic.

1. applied AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext from netkas found here.

2. applied IOATAFamily.kext from Dune found here.

result: still getting kernel panic in both kexts

My next step will be to remove Dune's IOATAFamily and try sigmaris found here. I'll post results for anyone else that experiences this but my impression is that it's an old issue due to ICH7 and the Intel 945GC.

This is for a niece while I'm in for the holidays so any help is appreciated.

I hate opening a thread and not finishing it.

Found a solution for the IOATAFamily.kext kernel panics via a DSDT hack. Details located here.

See hardware above for whether it applies to your install.

PS2 keyboard: used VoodooPS2Controller Kexts

To Do:

Sound: Azalia ALC883 via legacy kext and DSDT (HDEF) hack.

Ethernet: Realtek 8100c via replacing custom AppleRTL8139Ethernet.kext in the contents of IONetworkingFamily.kext

Will detail when complete for future reference.
