tux91
Hi everyone, I am currently running iAtkos v7 (that's 10.5.7) on my Compaq Presario c712nr laptop. My setup is almost perfect except for the processor getting very hot (it's usually about 80 degrees Celsius). The fan is almost always off, or at least I don't hear it, but sometimes it will kick in and get very loud and it will go on like that for a minute or two and then it will turn off again. The laptop will sometimes get so hot it switches off all by itself. I tried a lot of configuration options (using a Voodoo kernel, trying different SMBIOSes, disabling the disabler kext, installing Intel SpeedStep support and so on). Nothing seems to help. I tried deleting the AppleCPUThermo.kext and this resulted in the processor being cool when I switch the laptop on but then it will gradually get hot under the load and it will stay this way. The specs are the following: Intel Pentium Dual-Core 1.47 GHz for each core (basically Core 2 Duo with reduced L2 cache) 2.5 gigs of RAM Intel GMA X3100 Not sure about the motherboard, but I think it's based on an Intel chipset Any help would be appreciated. At first I thought it was the "iAntivirus" that causes proc and fan getting high temp since there were reports that the iAntivirus did caused some fans to make loud noises due to unknown reason or probably too much high loads. But I was wrong, I already removed iAntivirus and occassionally the fan and the temperature still rises back and forth I dunno why - I'm using Leopard updated to 10.5.8 Edit: I found an alternative solution to this. Some people say that it was the fan control so they used this app: Download: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23049 but I doubt about the temperature getting 80C, that should be regulated based on OS and not via manual control. Will post report when I finish thorough testing. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/200484-processor-getting-hot/#findComment-1348473 Share on other sites
tux91
smcFanControl does not work. It simply doesn't do anything, it doesn't control the fan speed, at least not for my system. Yheng
Remove AppleCPUthermo.kext, and AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext, and remove extensions.mkext and extensions.kextcache. go to finder and navigate to /system/library/extensions, and youre there. to delete them, it will ask you for your password. boot with -f on OS startup Backup First! Note: May or May Not work depending on your hardware setup If all else fails try this: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...st&id=55647 thanks to lordsoth Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/200484-processor-getting-hot/#findComment-1348495 Share on other sites
tux91
I cannot delete AppleThermal.kext for some reason, it just keeps coming back on startup. The modified AppleACPIPlatform.kext didn't help either, it's 89 C right now and the fan is silent. tux91
ok, after managing to delete AppleThermal.kext after all, the fan is working and the temperature is mostly in the low 70's. Is that normal or is still too hot? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/200484-processor-getting-hot/#findComment-1348539 Share on other sites
Lord_Jeremy
My Apple MacBook Pro hovers between 65 and 70ºC even with light usage. I'd say that's fairly normal for a modern laptop. Probably why they're called notebooks now, way too hot for lap use!
