After lots of struggling I managed to get my Intel HDA883 sound working on Snow Leopard using the VoodooHDA kext. (for those who haven't yet the secret appears to be that you need to delete the AppleHDA kext so that only the VoodooHDA kext is installed.... another way of doing this is to install the Azalia kext package...this uninstals the troublesome AppleHDA kext and then manually delete all new kexts installed with todays date before using Kexthelper to install the VoodooHDA kext. Use system profiler to check which ones...see software, extensions.)

OK....so now my system is up running and great...I can see and hear the nice streaming video teaser for 2012 using Front Row and all is well!

Actually not...when I take a lesson in Garageband within seconds the teachers voice goes out of synch with the audio and then I get an error window that keeps popping up telling me that the Audio and Midi are not in synch. Don't know what to do but would really like to fix this problem. Anyone come across this before?
